View Full Version : Valve Tapping

Hi, I have a 1988 2.3L Ford ranger. I just bought it a few weeks ago. I just changed the oil and when I drained the old oil it looked VERY thick(Like chocolate Ice cream topping). Now that I put new clean oil in it I am hearing a tapping sound from inside the valve cover. (sounds like clicking valve) From what I've read so far there is no adjustment for the valve on this engine. Am I having a major problem or is it nothing to worry about? Any advice at all would be great.
Thanks, Jeff, St. Louis MO

Have you drove it?

Is it a very loud tick could you hear it from 10 feet away if so I would investigate further by removing the valve cover and see if anything is extremely loose.

U may also run it for awhile and see if it goes away after 10 minutes

some but not all exhaust leaks at the heads sound like a bad lifter or valve
