View Full Version : Ok so I have decided to go with the 5.0 swap after all

Well after great consideration and many mind changes about the motor i wanted, I am going to go with a 5.0 mustang motor out of a 92 notchback with the aod trans. I know what i need to do to get the motor to fit in the truck, however i have a few questions about the wiring of the engine into the truck. I was wanting to go with the mustang motor, and the 5.0 explorer engine harness, does anyone know if the harnesses will interchange? i am mainly doing this because i want to keep the computer in the ranger's factory location. Also with the engine and trans combo i'm going with, does anyone have a similar setup that could tell me about how long the driveshaft would have to be to get it to work on the truck? Any and all help or advise is greatly appreciated.

Don't know too much of the details going into the swap for those year ranger setups, but involves more wiring if going to maintain the efi. There is an excellent writeup and plenty of helpful information from rwenzig on cardomain. Many of the assembly in mine was done through trial and error. Great choice sticking with the aod setup, won't have to deal with any clutch issues that i've fought with for the last 3 years. Take your time and don't wear out your patience as it turns out to be an awesome truck when done...

The this going in your 06 (just guessing from your name) if so why such a older model motor? The newer expo motor/ harness would be more of a plug and play then this one would be. But if you are set on this one your biggest thing is going to be get the wiring diagrams for both vic's and set them side by side and compare the wiring and make your own harness, or look into getting a after market hot rod harness maybe.

I realize the wiring issues i'm going to come to, however I have a best friend who happens to be an ASE certified master tech, who also has access to alldata, the reason i'm going with the 5.0 is because the explorer motors are basically the same, diff heads and distributorless ignition system, is all i can recall being different between the two motors, i have also decided to upgrade from the mustang's dizzy to the explorer dis and trans to make the swap that much easier, if that makes any since... the reason i am chosing this particular motor is because it came out of the 92 mustang i used to drive before i got my ranger, so i know the basic issues that the motor has as well as what i'll need to repair/replace before putting the engine in the truck, the only issue i'm going to have is if i can't go with the explorer tranny is getting the aod to accept the speedo sensor, or getting a gauge cluster that will accept the speedo cable, then of course adjusting the trans pressure for the kickdown cable so that I don't blow the gears out of the trans. thanks for the good words and the great pointers, if you guys have any more you think will be helpful (even if they aren't that helpful) they will be greatly appreciated and i will take all info under advisement.

Personally if I was using this motor and tranny combo I would go ahead and put the wires that you need to run the motor into your reg harness that a way its good and running as for the cluster- make a custom one or take the one out of the stang lod it to fit into the ranger.
