View Full Version : Odd ticking after oil change

My question is I just changed my oil and now I get a strange ticking noise. I have been doing oil for 4 years now and it all went as planned.

truck: 1997 2.3 with 94,000

-drain oil
-pull filter
-open filler cap
-prefill new STP oil fiter and lube ring
-replace drain and filter
-add oil and check level

I triple checked the oil and have checked for leaks with cardboard on the ground. The noise sounds like something is rattling around inside the oil pan. any suggestions

how do I check the timing chain

Also I was very sure that this noise was not there before the oil change.

The noise will be nowt to do with your oil change apart from draining out the old thicker oil which would`ve been deadening any engine noises and rattles so making the ticking more apparent.

But I have a new problem, I am getting a small drip of oil. I left the cardboard under my truck and now I am getting spots on it. They seem to be right in the middle of the truck, under the oil pan.

I hate when things don't go my way.

Hey any up date on what was causeing the ratteling noise? I just had the exact same thing happen to my ranger? (2.3l 1996) Wasn't any noise before the oil change and as soon as i changed it sounds almost like a diesel from the oil pan.

even tho mines older and 2.9l ive got a ticking noise thought altenator but rebuilt still doing it so im thinking might be spark plugs haven't changed in a year or checked em and i got one in a hard spot cuz a v6 i didn't change n bet its outta gap ive herd this little annoyance could be outta gap plugs or detonated ones on all rangers so for days now i keep thinking to pull plugs n see whats up but gotta buy a decent ratchet that swivels n bent for that hard one and a new socket try pullin plugs if you haven't looked either awhile bet its that regap or change, later.;)

U sure it's not the timing chain?

wouldn't be timeing chain u would have a miss fire or sluggish accelleration,coughing throttlebody,stahling,at least some type of engine malfunction noticeable but to be safe this always works to set ya at ease about any timeing mishaps the old man mechanic trick get a long dowl rod,or,steel rod,sometimes use oil dipstick if sensetive person,stick end of rod on timeing cover feel with tips of fingers for any diffrent anomalies than engine running and put ear close to end of rod try if you hear tick or chain/gear noise that works 98% to find a chain fixin to break or gears worn or missing teeth. :rolleyes:

it would not be the timing chain because the 2.3 does not have a chain it has a belt.

just b/c it doesnt have those symptoms doesnt mean it cant be the timing chain. it can still rattle without misfiring...
and i guess he doesnt have a chain lol

mine is making the bottom end chatter from under the engine not the top end. It wasnt there before I changed my oil but now it sounds like a bunch of rocks in a can. I used 5/30 quaker state oil as the manual sugested the service records that came with the truck stated tha 5/20 bulk penzoil was used in the last oil change. I think maybe my truck hates this oil or maybe it prefers 5/20? who know im gonna change it tonight and find out if I can make it worse or better.

The ticking went away after driving for about 100 miles, I have no clue what was causing it.

As for the oil leak, I replaced the crush washer on the drain plug and solved that problem.

Then I sold the truck about a 6 months ago.

PS. some of you really need to learn how to communicate in a readable way. 6 lines of non-punctuated text is just worthless.

When Turbo questioned the grammar it was interesting. When you said it it was not funny or needed. I would suggest that if you need help in the future..... to join another forum........with 12 posts you shouldn't be complaining about anything....

ha lolz man yea stretched chains rattle some, but anywho he did say 4cyl. i think on most or all 4bangers have belts but even bad gears can cause it or to many missing belt teeth ive had a dodge 4banger once made all kinds a noize ticking,poping,whinning,till it broke,and now my ranger has top end ticking but i got a good idea what it is my plugs need checking, and or replacement i got one plug in back didn't change cuz of hard to get to and it sounds like that type of plug missfire tick or spark detonation and noise did stop while driveing yesterday,but glad dudes noise stopped hope it stays that way. and a i only was quoteing STL's post which he conveniently removed i see hmm contributors get that extra option lolz.

The only thing I had was an initial rattle but it went away after the first start up. Now if I could just get rid of this knock and ping under heavy throttle. I'm on my second tank of fuel system cleaner. At least I can run with 87 now instead of a higher grade...

have you tried sea foam? I've used it on all my rigs and it always seems to help clean em out. My friends and a lot of people on here like it too.
