Default Re: 87 ranger just will not start

If you disconnect the fuel line (coming from the fuel pump(s)) that connects to the fuel rail, and turn the key to the ON position three or four times, you should see a stream of gas shoot from the fuel line eventually. Sometimes the the fuel pump and lines must be primed like this to get gas to ever reach the injectors, especially at times when installing new pumps or if you run out of gas. After you have established that gas is indeed shooting like it should out of the fuel line that connects to the fuel rail, re-connect the line and move onto the spark plugs. You can test for spark by having a helper try to start the engine while you touch a spark plug to a piece of ground on the vehicle. The spark plug should still be connected to the wire and distributor. Wear rubber gloves and dont get electrocuted! You should see a spark when you touch it to metal. If you are getting spark and gas, then it could only be two more things : the distrubutor is not installed correctly (find threads about locating top dead center), or the fuel injectors have failed. Most likely, all four fuel injectors have not failed and it should still start even if it runs badly. If it backfires when you try to start it without adding starter fluid, then your timing is off (again, find threads about top dead center).
