Question 5.0 swap into 2000 ranger

Ok, so I have been lurking on numerous websites looking at what everyone has done with the explorer and mustang engine swaps into their rangers and it doesn't seem like its to big of a PITA. I was on craigslist today and found a 5.0 windsor 302 out of an '89 mark vii and after some quick research found that it is the same engine used in the same year mustang. The engine runs and everything the guy only want $700 for it. I'm going to try and talk him down of course . But anyways I work at a performance shop so I have access to just about anything you can think of and my boss is a total genius when it comes to cars. So what do you guys think? Should I go for the swap? Or should I just buy the engine and slowly build it up into a monster then swap it? Money is a little tight right now with my son being 5 months old so I was thinking wait and build it but dammit I want the baddest ranger in town lol!

You will need the computer of a 5.0 at the very least with the same year. Pretty sure you'll need the same year & model as well.

Also it would be easier to just remove your ranger's wiring harness & use the computer and wiring harness from 89 5.0 mark vii. Using their gauges might be easier then converting your rangers. Or do after market ones.

The above is why people normally buy a donor car. You will also need a 5.0 transmission to match & put that in your ranger as well. If a manual transmission, you'll need its matching master/slave system. Might need a bigger fuel pump as well. You might also need fuel injectors which are a few hundred at least, and many other stuff as well. Such as pulleys/alt/etc. If your buying only an engine, and then buying other parts, it'll be very costly. Better to get a donor car.

OR

Get the motor, then get the same year & model donor car with a dead engine for cheap.

Well that's the thing, the engine is complete with computer and everything already on it so I just need the wiring harness and transmission. I am most likely going to do the aftermarket gauges and everything just because I can get everything for cheap where I work.

If its a manual you can use a M5OD-R2 (rangers have a M5OD-R1) from a 97-03 4.2L F150 and clucth form a 96 F150 with a 5.0 its direct bolt in to the ranger uses the same slave cylinder. Only modification is needed to make the bellhousing holes just a little bigger for the 5.0

The pros to this is the trans is cheaper than T5 with the same torque ratings and it bolts in
The cons is its not a T5 its still a truck trans so it'll shift like a truck lol

I might just use that tranny for the time being, at least until I can save up enough for a t5. Now I know this is the exact same engine used in the '89 stang so what if I was to get an ECM, PCM,and wiring harness for a mustang and just apply it to the engine instead of using the mark vii stuff? Would that change anything or would it be pointless to spend the money?

Wiring harness should be 95% the same I'd personally look for a A9L computer then get it tuned after its running using a moates chip

I will look into that, what are the pros and cons to this? Yesterday we had a guy come into the shop and he has a '94 thunderbird super coupe engine, the supercharged v6, it's been torn down and completely redone it just needs a new oil pan and blower. He said he'd sell it to me for $500. What about that? I know it's the same block and uses the same motor mounts, but I also know I am going to need to buy an inter cooler, electric fan, blower, oil pan, and a new rear end. This engine uses the same tranny that I have now and I just got everything to rebuild it. Do you know if Ivan use the same wiring harness? Or should I just keep with the 5.0?

I don't know if you know this but try copart.com. That is where I found my explorer/mountaineer for the swap. Got it for cheap, took everything I needed off the donor and scraped it and got another $200 back for basically a shell. Good luck with the swap
