manual transmissions for a 302 swap
hey guys so I'm about to put in a 5.0 into my 2000 ranger 2wd and i was pretty much set on putting in a t5 wc from a mustang but after reading about them i hear they can't take much abuse and since i plan on getting some good power out of this engine i was wondering what other 5 or 6 speed trannys are out there that could take more abuse and that would fit behind a 302 and have decent shifter placement kinda close to the seats.

If im not mistaken a zf out of a f150 works pretty well. You're not going to be able to slam through the gears like you could a t5 though. If you're looking to convert to 4x4 its a pretty good choice.

Tremec T5, T56, and TKO trannies will work but be prepared to have your bank account put on life support. Have you considered an automatic tranny?

For the kind of power you've told us that you're planning on getting out of your 5.0, aftermarket.

ya i had i had a 4r70w all planned out with a manual valve body and then changed my mind to a stick either way I'm gonna have to spend some money tho. does the t-56 have a removable bell housing and will it bolt up to the 302?

Re: manual transmissions for a 302 swap
They do have several bell housings availaible for the SBF. The reason I asked about automatics is because Jegs has automatic trannys for sale that can handle up to 450 horsepower and roughly about the same in torque. The best part is that they start at $659 bucks. By the time you go and get your manual tranny, bell housing, clutch/throwout bearing assembly, you could've bought at least 2 automatic trannys. And if you go with Tremec's products, then you could've bought 3. I am not down on manual trannys by any means, but if I can save alot of money by going with an automatic, then the automatic win win over the manual everytime in that situation.
