Which V8 should i use?
I wont be able to do the swap for a good while, but i want to start knowing what to do and get to do an engine swap in my 2001 ranger. My question is, which V8 is easiest to put in and gets the best mpg? I know it's a V8 but ive read where people get 24 mpg highway or more in a 302, is this something you can commonly get? And im open to all engines, ive even looked at the cummins 4bt, herd they get really good mpg. And the engine doesn't have to be a ford which i implied with the cummins, and i dont need to hear how you should only keep a ford in a ford, unless it's a legit comment i would need to know, Thanks for everything, just need to know what direction to start in to research it.

5.0 from explorer will probably be the easiest.
Personally, I think it would be awesome to have a diesel though.

I think so too, even though its a 4 cylinder, but they sound good i saw some on youtube. And ive herd anywhere from 22 mpg city and 28 highway to 26 city and 34 highway. But they cost a bit more $'s

Re: Which V8 should i use?
A 4bt with the right trans, wheels, and gears will get you close to 50 mpg. It will cost over 5k to get parts to make that swap.
The 302 in 2wd is a bit more work than the 4wd trucks. The expo 5.0 always comes backed with a 4wd trans.
It really comes out to what deals you find and are willing to make work.

I plane on leaving the body, wheels, ect like it is, would a 302 swap be about $3,000?, what is i buy all new stuff, how much would that cost?

What about manuals, or would you need to buy one separate? i know i want a 5spd or even 6 spd manual.

Mostly just a daily driver, and some light towing, like 4,000-5,000lbs at the most

FWIW, I got a 98 expo donor for 650 with1 130k on the clock. Sold parts I didnt need, cluster, ohc, rear, misc body panels. Still could have scrapped the body for some cash, still have the seats and console. At this point to v8 and its trimmings are free, I do need an alternator and deal with pats. Giving me a stock looking and functioning swap.
So look around and see what you can find.

Re: Which V8 should i use?
The 2wd 5.0's are very rare I have never seen anything other than an AWD in both flavors.

ok, so now i know it can be done cheap, but finding a 2wd will be hard. It might be better to find one with a no good transmission and buy a transsmision or something, ive herd T-5's were good.

Re: Which V8 should i use?
I looked at some rebuilt creat engines, they go for about $600. Should i get one from an explorer still? and what year would be best?

Re: Which V8 should i use?
Do the extra work and stuff a 3V 5.4L in with the 6 speed torqshift it is by far your best bet as far a gas mileage goes. Double overdrive and more than enough power to throw a ranger around.

Is that what is put in the f-150s? What mpg do you think i could get and with what gearing? And how much harder is that to put in then a 302?

Much.
You'd be much better off with the 5.0.
Sooooo many performance mods out there for it it's not even funny.
The 5.4 I'd never drop one in a ranger.
