sohc 4.0 came in explorers, rangers and mustangs at least.
won't have to swap your tranny.
good power to mpg, respected durability.
i see complete assemblies on ebay for under 800 from dismantlers.
or buy a donor explorer, swap the engine and the rear end and sell the rest.

he would still need a new tranny if its an integral bellhousing because a 4.0 and 3.0 are completly diffrent blocks but a 4.0 would be a good choice

true but sometimes you cant go off that because a 302 and a 390 both had a c6 but they had two completly diffrent bolt patterns soo they may be the same they may be diffrent idk

That aint going to happen. When you do a V8 swap all of that must be changed. Your stock 5 speed manual tranny won't even bolt up to a V8 and if it did, it would be destroyed in practically no time. I wouldn't be a bit surprised either if the transfer case wouldn't hold up as well. If you still want to do a V8 swap for DD purposes, I recomend that you find an F150 of the same year that has a 5 speed manual tranny and a 4X4 setup and use that as a donor vehicle.

The borg warner 1354 is plenty strong for a smaller V8 swap. I would have no quelms bolting it to a 302 especially considering the SOHC 4.0 puts as much power down. Considering that's pretty much the only motor that easily fits...
