A 302 would also be the easiest.

a 302 is cheaper and easier to find the swap parts at.

I'm going to swap my 3.0 L, auto, from my 2000 Ranger. If using the 5.0L from an Explorer, will it also have to be a 2000? Will I have to upgrade the tranny to a c-4 or c-6? I could use all the info, anybody will supply. This will be my first, so any order that parts need to come out, would be greatly appreciated. So far, I have the radiator out and will take off fan clutch next. If there is a manually or something, on when and how parts come out, please direct me there.....Sincerely........Kenny

www.bigblockranger.com . The 302 will be alot easier and more practical.
Alot of people stroke the 302 to a either a 347 or a 351 so they have the power of a larger engine but it's still in a 5.0 package. That website I posted shows the progress of putting in a 460 big block into a ranger. It's alot of work and is very expensive. plus you'll have to fabricate alot if not all of the parts needed to perform this swap.

it will be alot easier if you use the same year explorer. Basicly the Ford explorer and ranger are the same but one had a V8 option from the factory. just a few design changes here and there. It's a prime example of "BADGING" of 2 different vehicles. If you use the exact same year explorer (1999 to 2001) which had the 302 from the factory. IT BECOMES A DIRECT BOLT IN. Basicly I'd start looking in salavge yards, classified adds, and use the internet to find a DONOR EXPLORER for your project. It'll take about 10 to 12 hours to do the swap with the proper tools. I'd also start by removing the front fenders, hood and grill and go from there. www.v8ranger.com or www.mercuranger.com . They have all the parts listed that you'll need as well as some pics and videos of other rangers with this swap completed. ( www.v8ranger.com I recomend this site for videos and clips).

Re: V8 conversion
hey guys i'm about to start getting the stuff together to do a 5.0 efi swap in my 06 ranger, i know that i will need to get the wiring harness, computer, engine, and trans, also i will have to rewire the gauges to work w/ the v8 and will have to wire in the pats system from the explorer and get a new pats key to get the truck to start is there anything else i would need to do this or does anyone have any photos of the wiring of the gauges and pats system for a truck this new?

Re: V8 conversion
hey here's a crazy proposal that if i am thinking right will work... i have an 06 ranger w/ pats type e and i know if i get a 99-01 explorer or mountaineer i will have to have the truck towed to the dealer and have them reflash the pcm to accept the pats type e key, or i could wire the pats type b from the explorer/mountaineer and get a key w/ the code in it for the truck... so my idea is if i am already taking the ranger ecu and wiring harness out of the truck could i get a non pats type explorer/ mountaineer engine could i use this in the truck and have the key i have now work and turn the engine off... correct me if i'm wrong please this is just a crazy thought that ran through my head
