The 4.6 liter is bigger than a 460 in terms of actual size. It has the horsepower of a 289, but the torque is about the same level as a stock 351 Windsor because the OHC engines have a broader and flatter torque curve than the OHV. To install a 4.6 liter into a ranger, you'd have to remove the inner fender wells, and there's a really good chance that you'd have to modify the frame just to accomidate the width of a 4.6 liter. In my own opinion, you're alot better off using the 5.0 instead. It will be alot easier to do this swap than it would be to do a 4.6.

The cost can vary by a pretty good margin. Here's 2 links that should help you answer any if not all questions concerning a V8 swap.
This one is a little bit old but has some really good info and it pretty much sets the standard. However it's been a long time since it's been updated so please keep this in mind:

This one here has alot more detailed information and it's not been updated in a while either, but the info is alot more up to date than the previous link. There's also a video clip and several pictures of other rangers that have completed the swap, including Tim Sockness' Pro-Street Ranger:

How much you spend depends apon your experience level, and as far as time goes it depends on wether you do the swap in a well equipped garage or your driveway. I hope this helps out.
