T5 conversion
I have spent some time researching the pros and cons of swapping the tailshaft housing on my 89 mustang T5 to an S10 derivative in order to get a better shifter location in my 2002 single cab Ranger. I have a full size explorer console in it now and the current 2.3 5 speed shift location protrudes through the cubby hold portion of the console. To me this is the perfect location for aesthetics and comfort in driving. Is there anyone out there who has done the S10 tailshaft conversion out there? I need to know is after doing this conversion, the shifter location will be the same as the current 4 cylinder setup. Some discussions state it is pretty close, just not sure what exactly that means..... Any help here would be...helpful

Re: T5 conversion
hmmm, no takers eh? Well, I went off and did it anyway. Here are some pics of a couple of items that I ran into along the way.
After installation of S10 shifter rail. This went without a hitch
Some difference in gear box vent location. In the S10 housing you can see a small hole in the side of the shifter linkage housing.
Some small difference in how the oil slinger area is machined
Told by company who often does this conversion to leave out the slinger completely as it makes no difference in lubrication.
Completed gear box with S10 tail shaft extension in place. Now awaiting an S10 Hurst shifter assembly as the Ford T5 will not work with the S10.
I am going to plug the speedometer hole as the signal I need for the speedometer comes from the differential anyway. If any questions out there I will be happy to help.

Re: T5 conversion
Inspection is due on truck next month, so I need to get this emissions before I pull the 4 cylinder out. I think that this will happen in early April. I still have to settle on a which programmer in order to delete auto transmission function and PATS system in current configuration.

Certain s10 came with a t5 and unlike the mustang t5 the shifter is moved forward "I think" 7-9" I can't remember specifics.
The mustang t5 places the shifter almost at the seat way to far back. You don't want the s10 t5 internals you want the world class t5 for a 5.0l but I have always wondered on swapping the s10 tail shaft to keep the shifer dang near stock location.
----------
Rick where did you end up getting the tail shaft housing from?
Also you mounting it to your 4cyl or a 5.0l?

Re: T5 conversion
The conversion moves the shifter right at 7 inches. Not 100% sure this will put it in the stock location, but the research I have done leaves me to believe it will. I am going to hold back getting the shifter lever itself until I can eyeball it in the truck. This conversion poses problems for those of you who need a signal from the transmission to drive you speedometer, but there are posts on the internet where others have relocated the speedometer gear on the tailshaft and made it work.
I guess what drove me to do this conversion is that there is so little room to begin with in the single cab, I did not want to start moving things around and eating up more space. I also have a full explorer console and really like the looks of how the shifter comes out of '"cubby" area in the console and don't wan to loose my drink holders....

Re: T5 conversion
The tailshaft took some time to find. I looked in all the local JY around my area, Craigslist and even ebay. Looked like I was going to have to find a complete S10 transmission as I could not find the parts separately. Finally made a call to Southern Gear in Atlanta and they were able to sell me the housing and just the S10 rail. I really did not want all the left over shit from the S10 tranny so this worked well for me. Also was able to get some advice from the transmission builder at Southern and made some pretty good friends as a side effect of the deal.

He checked in here a day after that response.
Any word on your results so this thread can really help others? I'd really like to know myself.
