Default V8 swap from 96 explorer

If I buy a 1998 Explorer, would I be able to transfer everything I need to make it work on my 1998 Ranger 2wd?

I know I will have to change steering colums because my truck is a 5 speed, but aside from that, if I get a complete running explorer, I assume that it will have everything I need. Am I right?

Only thing i can think of is the 2wd to 4wd issue... is the exlporer 4wd??
If you do this, you should take lots of pictures and do a write up.. lol i am thinking of doing this in a few years...

and while you have the explorer motor out, and before you put it in, i would maybe go thru and put in new stuff like gaskets, etc..... you don't want to spend all that time to stick that v8 in there, and a year or so down the road, have an issue an have to pull it out to fix.

good luck

no the explorer is a 2wd and actually is a 1996 not a 1998... if I do this I will take notes and share them with the forum.

Ok your first post said both were 98s.

If your putting a 98 into a 98 you will be fine, but if your putting a 96 into a 98 or vice versa, you may have some issues.
I know on the ranger station there's a brief write up, and says it works for 98+.

That brief write up isn't the best, so maybe you could do a more extensive write up with more pics

I used a 96 explorer engine in my 00' and it was pretty simple as far as the wiring part. I had to buy 4.0 motor mounts and have custom motor mount plates made, and have my drive shaft shortened too. Also had to add a return fuel line since the expo has a return fuel system and the ranger is returnless.

is the reason for the custom mounts due to your truck been a 4wd? I know the awd trucks have a much larger transfer case...

where you able to use the Explorer oil pan?

aside from the custom mounts and dealing with the return fuel line, did you have to buy anything else?

I have a complete vehicle, (1996 explorer) so I'm hoping I don't have to buy many extra parts to make the swap...

My truck is only 2wd and I had to have the plates because the placement of the motor mounts is different on the 2.5L's. I was able to use the explorer oil pan, it fits perfectly. The only other thing was having to get my driveshaft shortened, but I dont think I had to buy anything else.

has anyone thought of doing the all wheel drive swap from a expo to a ranger. Kinda like the old gmc typhoon and cyclone. i know they were 3.8 turbos, but those of you that are old enough to remember these know the were pretty bad.

It's possible but expensive. Going from 2WD to either 4WD or AWD isn't a very practical swap. There are some suspension issues you'll have to deal with along with other things that must be considered. It's best to start with a 4WD ranger and convert to AWD instead of the 2WD version of rangers. That way all you'd really have to change out would be the t case and possibly the drive shafts. Plus what was said earlier is going from a 96 model year to a 98 model or vice versa can present some serious problems. 1998 model years on the explorers and rangers really started to change in terms of technology such as the wiring, and a few other features added or that have been used in the past got upgraded.
