I did it with my 2000 and its the same (besides appearance stuff) as your truck, I can get into it more in detail if you seriously want to, but its a helluva lot of modification i will say that.

yeah with any used engine i would probably go ahead and rebuild it you never know how many miles are on it or how long it has set or how the p/o treated it.... and plus you can detail your engine bay while you are rebuilding it and all that good stuff.....

If its out of a vehicle older than 01, youll have to rebuild it anyway to comply with CA's smog laws lol

if possible use a whole explorer switch the motor tranny computer and entire wiring harness sounds like alot of work but its what i did to mine an i have had very little problems with anything.... beside tire keep randomly going bald.

What about the weight of the engine and the front suspension -- is it necessary to beef it up or otherwise tweak the front end?

Not really the weight difference isn't that crazy might lower it a half inch from where it sat stock

It's about a hundred pounds more give or take a little bit. It really depends on what engine your ranger came with.
