almost sounds like you need a bit more pressure try going to 6 and check the float level in the carb

Well how many PSI does the carb require? And no you shouldn't take the return off unless you want the excess to spew out on the road....

Even the thought of getting rid of the return worries me. Get a pressure gauge on the output and watch the pressure going to the carb. You might have the wrong regulator.

Check your vitals -
fuel pressure to carb
set float level
idle mixture screws

ummm,,,,you only need a low pressure fuel pump....im running a small inline electric, that is no where near 50 psi....edelbrock takes 5.5 psi....check your oil make sure its not full of gas....
