Default 351 engine swap

I have a friend who will give me a free 351 and matching tranny for my truck. I currently have a 4.0 v6. It's a 1990 and has 385000 miles on it. The motor has alot less miles and the power would be sweet. Would it be worth the work? What problems would I have? Both trannys are automatic. Any and all info is needed.

I hope it is alot ,alot,alot less than 385,000 miles on it!
How's the compression?
How many miles on the tranny?

As far as I know compression is good and I think he said a little over 100,000 miles

That's not too bad on that engine, but I would have it rebuilt. The good thing is that you got a 351 for free along with the tranny. If I was you, I'd do some research a bit while the engine is getting rebuilt so you will know what's involved.

X2 on rebuilding it....don't swap one "junk" motor for another.....would suck to do allll that work just to have to remove the 351 because it blew up on you.....

and when you do rebuild, use the info you use on research to build it right, and that truck will be screaming

X3 on the rebuild, mine required both engine and tranny rebuilt, still running great. As for the 351, just a bit more goes into dropping in the larger engine and requires alot more research from those that have already done this type of swap. Moves like a raped ape afterwards. Would highly recommend an 8.8 31 spline rear from the explorer or 9" to handle the extra torque from the tendency to show off every now and then.
