That's a DIRECT BOLT IN. The 1999 to 2001 explorers had a 302/5.0 engine installed from the factory. All you need is the mounts and a donor explorer will have everything you need. Basicly it's ALL PLUG AND PLAY. just make sure that your ranger and explorer is THE EXACT SAME YEAR. It can be done in about 10 to 12 hours with the proper tools.
WOW, wait a minute, I have a 2000 ford ranger 4x4 4.0, I should be able to use and ford expo from the years 1999-2001. as long as I get one from thoses years it is plug and play. It does not need to be the "EXACT" same year as my ranger.... Right??

The wiring harnesses could have changed so its best to have the same year

ok, SO, i know this is a over asked question but i would like to have it answered on this thread. I am planning on taking a week off work to get this done. I have never pulled a engine before but I am pretty mechanically inclined. Is a week enough time? I am just dropping the engine is their stock.... for now. And how many miles it to many? I am going to the local salvage yard today, well im leaving any minute. To just look and see.

And can I grab the computer out of one expo and use it for another? I am trying to gather up parts now.

Dude...u will need the engine, radiator, transmission, rear axle, transfercase, computer and harness.....
How are u going to afford all that???
A good 302 engine is about $500-$1000...just for the engine....yes that is junk yard prices...for a 302 with 80k or more miles....anything less than 80kmiles is even more expensive.
Go to carparts.com and it will give u a list of all the 302s in the jys in your area...
Ive already done this research..it will cost about $2000 or so..for everything.

I think the jys here in mn are way different..their prices are almost retail for some shit...and most of them wont let u in the yard or pull your own parts...

They want like $30 for the explorer OHCs and $5 for the temp sensor....at that price Its not worth buying to try and sell on the forum...they normally sale for $30 on here.

Ohcs at my yard are $15 and the temp sensor come with it. Center consoles are $20 clusters are $25

Yeah they want $45-60 for gauge clusters and $50 for center consles...
Its outrageous.

I wouldnt use a 98..they had an issue with the computers....tuners and programmers only work with 99+ rangers and explorers.....and u still need all the other stuff.....radiator, tranny and tcase and rear axle..

Well, I am going to use my ranger radiator for the time being, and that engine had the tranny and Tcase with it.

I dont think it wil fit with your stock radiator...they wont line up...and dont forget the rear end....
Your best bet is to get a full donor explorer...and I wouldnt put anything in that has over 100k miles on it.

So, I will keep prowling craigslist until then, . I have read a few build threads, and from what I have learned the ranger radiator will work. But I have not tried it out for myself. Also, i will be keeping the stock rear in the truck for now. I think I have the 8.8, and that should be good, at least until I can replenish my funds.

the best thing to do with this project is not to force a time frame. when you run into an issue, take your time and do it right the first time. it's impossible to have perfect foresight, no matter how much research you do, there's just too much to think of everything. just do it and tackle the issues as they come at you. the mind set of "well, I need to halfass this and that because I need to get this truck done", just asking for problems down the road. week wouldn't be long enough for me, depends on what you have available, and for me, that's hand tools. Swapping an engine with just strictly hand tools takes a lot of time, creativity, and worlds of patience. I know it would probably take me 2 full days at least to run the exhaust just by itself.
