I've seen way more S10's done, but that makes a 5.0l equipped Ranger way cooler. I think I'm just going to build one of each later on lol

Basicly it's ALL PLUG AND PLAY. just make sure that your ranger and explorer is THE EXACT SAME YEAR. It can be done in about 10 to 12 hours with the proper tools.
actually they started putting the 5.0/302 in the explorers in late 96. but yeah it is just about a plug and play direct bolt in for a 98-00 ranger. on a 97 and older the explorer mounts wont work but there are plenty of aftermarket swap mounts that will. im not sure about 01 and newer rangers because im about to do this swap on my 2000 and ive just been researching the swap on the 98-00 and have came across alot of stuff for the 97 and older too.

Well yes and no. It's a different version of the good old 302 from 1999 to 2001 because of the emissions eqipment. plus the mounts are different too because of this situation. In 2002 the Ford explorers went to a different engine and engine harnesses. They went to a different ECU too. They went with the 4.6 2V modular engines. The 2V is long gone and soon the 3V will be gone too (2011 with the new 5.0 D.O.H.C).
I can't wait for new the version of the 5.0 the competition is calling it Coyote Ugly. Chrysler is scared of it because it beat their 6.1 liter SRT8 on Power, torque, and emissions by a land slide.

well the mounts are the same for 96-01, just checked on advance auto parts website and its the same part number for all of them, im sure some of the emissions equipment is different but im not sure what is, but other than the emissions it still is a good ole 302, 2002 is when they went to a different body style and used the 4.6. and yeah the new 5.0 coyote is a badass engine, cant wait to see these on the street.

well that's kool about the engine mounts being the same. To answer the emissions question your exhaust manifolds are more restrictive. I can't wait to see what engine components come out for the new Coyote 5.0. You know like cylinder heads, valvetrain components, camshafts, rods, crankshafts etc.

knightmare 1015,

If you are sure on this swap, it would make my dreams come true. So you know what I'm doing, I'm taking out the 3.0L, V-6, auto, out of my 2000 Ford Ranger, marking everything on the harness, that it came from from. I just got out of the hospital, so I'm not suppose to put full weight on my left leg, yet.

I'm guessing at doing a little at a time, I'm still looking at a couple of weeks, by the time I have everything pulled out, marked, clean the engine bay and probably repaint.

So, what I'm understanding is I'll need a 2000 Ford Explorer, 5.0L/302? Should I consider a new wiring harness? What about the transmission? Should I go to something like the C-4? Right now, I have a column shifter and would love to put in a automatic floor shifter.

Approx. how much monies do you think, would be involved and where could I find one of these direct bolt ins?

Thanks so much for the insight and any help would be greatly appreciated, for this will be my first engine swap............Kenny

Kenny, all you would need is a 2000 Ford explorer with same layout that you have now. You have 2 choices when it comes to doing this swap as far as donor vehicles go. The first choice is buy a good used Explorer with the same configuration that you have now and a V8. Or you can pay a visit to a junk yard and see what you can find there. The monies required to do this swap can be anywhere from $400 bucks on up to well over $5,000 bucks. The donor explorer will have everything you need period. The C4 trans is a good fit and about all you would need to do is have your driveshaft shortend for a proper fit. and you'd have to loose the trans tunnel for the in floor automatic. For that swap I'd start with a manual transmission ranger instead of what you have. Just do some research and watch your money a bit and you'll be fine. Take your time and ask questions. I also have bad knees so I can relate to having surgey myself. I've done had 4. I WOULDN'T TELL YOU TO DO THIS IF I KNEW I WOULDN'T WORK. PLUS I WOULDN'T TELL YOU TO DO ANYTHING I WOULDN'T DO. You see I'm a true professional and a gentleman. If you need help just post your question on here in a thread and about a 1/2 hour or later you'll get your answer.

Default Trust me...

Here's a photo of my Ford certificate:

I worked long and hard to obtain this certificate. It's not easy to get. This is one of many required to be a Ford Master tech. I still have a few to go yet. But I plan on testing for ase certification soon. The only way to obtain this certificate is through a Ford Motor Co. approved program. I went through Nascar Tech in Moorseville, NC. I enrolled in the Ford Fact program and it was fun but intense. My thoughts on Nascar tech became negative when I entered Nascar engines and the wrench time virtually dropped to none. And then I realized they took my money and ran at that point.

Stephen,

I believe you, when you say you are a true professional and a real gentlemen, with gentlemen being high on the list. We don't come across alot of people, that are willing to help a stranger, in need, and I sure need it. When I was telling my wife, she couldn't believe it.

Today, we have friends in from Austin, Tx., so won't be doing much, but when I get back on it, I would like to tell you what I've done, so far as removing parts and labeling them and you can let me know if I'm right, wrong, etc. I hope you don't mind if i pick your brain, on this project. If so, just let me know, cuz so far the info you have provided, has really been helpful.

A quick note on why I would like to go with the automatic, is due to the 30+ surgeries I've had on my left leg and there isn't any bone left from my hip to my knee and very little muscle in the thigh area, but my hamstring is still in good shape, but still would make it hard to use a clutch, but maybe we can figure something out.

I hope you don't feel that you may have hooked up with job, that may take awhile, but I do want it to look good, for the least amount of money.

Thanks again, Steve and I'll send you the info on what I've done and then what I need to do.........Sincerely.............Kenny

Well thanks man about the compliment. Basicly You've already done the FIRST STEP. You came on here and looked for info from good people who have done some swaps and similar swaps. YOU HAVE ALREADY DONE THE SECOND STEP TOO. YOU LABLED EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU REMOVED IT. Alot of people who attempt this swap don't do this step and it takes 10 times longer. The column automatic trans will give you what you need and since the donor explorer must be identical, chances are you can probably use the SAME STEERING COLUM. All you'd have to do is change the steering linkage for clearances and you're good to go. You'll probably have to do that anyway for your exhaust headers. plus you might want to consider a 3 inch body lift to help in this matter (BUT THIS IS ONLY FOR 4 BANGER ENGINES). The V6 is a little bit bigger than most people realize. The 302/5.0 only weighs about 100 lbs more than what you have in there. To compensate for this and to eliminate the sag I'd go with a stronger and more supportive set of heavy duty shocks. www.therangerstation.com and search for V8 swaps. It even gives you the actual measurements of each small block. It shouldn't cost you but the price of the donor explorer and some time as well as labor. If you stay on it 10 to 12 hours max.

Default Here's another...

Here's another dirty little secret that alot of people "overlook". The 302 small block and 351 small block have alot of the same things with exception to the size and deck height plus a couple of other things too. But you can stroke a 302 pretty much all the way up to a 396 inch monster maybe even more if you want. Plus the 302 can use the 351 firing order (302 H.O. already does from the factory). Why not take the 5.0/302 and stroke it to a 351 Windsor. You'll have a 351 W in a 302 package.
