Default need help on 302 swap

hey guys, i have an 88 ranger 4x4 with the stock 2.9 engine and the trany. i am wanting to put a 5.0 in it. what will i also have to change??? will the stock radiator be able to pull it off. and if my transmission wont be able to take the power, where can i find a good 4x4 transmission that will fit the engine? any help would be helpful. thanks

I know the stock radiator can hold up, as far as transmissions go i had a c4 but mine was only 2wd. I was told I should put in a AOD for better gas mileage. The stock trans might hold for a little while but I think the 5.0 is too much for it.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking. How long did it take you to do the swap??

I'm pretty sure the motor won't bolt up to your stock transmission. But, I don't know much about the 4x4 swaps. Mine is 2wd and I used an aode.

AODE is the electronic AOD. Ford replaced AOD w/ AODe in '87 I believe. If I were you, I would find a AOD or a C6 and bolt a borg warner 1354 manual shift transfer case to it. Of course dont forget the custom placed motor mounts, custom built crossmembers, etc. Have fun and take lots of photos

Motor mounts can be done a lot of different ways. Adapter plates, AA plates, vert mounts flipped side to side, etc. All of this info is out there ready to be searched. Didn't have to do anything but move my trans cross member in the forward set of holes in the frame, stock cross member and mount bolted right to an AOD. Best bet is to go for it and ask when you get stuck because no two swaps will be exactly the same.

I would stay auto if I was you. Manuals are harder to setup with the different types of manuals that they did. A M50D is a good tranny but it might be differant than the toyo or mitsu that you have allready. 89 up ranger have the smaller M50D so they would swap easy. Is your clutch a cable or hydr. Biggest issue with a 4x4 is headers, but if you have a body lift, I know it makes clearances alot easier. I would do a efi 302 with a carb if I was you. Makes more power and you shouldn't loose to may mpg. I would look for a 86 to 95 302 and get an intake and carb, and headers. Should make about 300hp with the stock bottom end.

best bet would be grab yourself a 4x4 302 from a expo or a manual 4x4 302 from an mide eighties bronco/f-150
