Default Want to do a 302 swap

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum, but have been lurking around for some time.

So, i'm stuck in training until the end of February and since my truck will just be sitting at home, i figured it'd be a good time to have a V-8 swapped in! My Truck is a 98 4x4(auto trans), with a 3.0 in it, it is my daily driver, and does see some mud on the weekends. Fortunatly for me my grandfather owns a junk yard, so hopefully i can get most of the parts from him! I'll know more when I talk to him this weekend, but as of right now, i believe he has two possible donors in running condition.

First: I don't know the year(some time in the 90's), but it's an Explorer 4x4, and i know it has a 302
Second: Early 90's Lincoln, i'm pretty sure this is not an HO 302

My grandfather did offer to do the swap for me, and he has the knowledge to do so, but i'm not sure i want him to do it at his age with me not being there.

My question is this, what mods would you recommend i get, what needs to be put on before the engine is put in, what can wait to be upgraded at a later point in time? I want it to be nice, so i'm not set on using all used parts, so don't shy away from suggesting I purchase something if it'll help the engines performance, but let's keep it reasonable! If my grandfather does do this, I want it to be as easy as possible for him. Most likely i'll have someone else do it though.

A secondary question is this, I'm thinking about doing a 4" suspension lift as well, should i do this before, after, does it matter?

The Explorer engine is a far better choice for your swap. It will fit the 98 Ranger engine compartment better, has more electrical similarities and it comes with more performance parts. 99~01 Ex will match your 98 Ranger fuel system better. 96~97 Ex eliminates the hassle of PATS but complicates the speedometer a little. 98 has PATS and the older fuel system. It really doesn't matter all that much because any of these mismatches can be overcome.

On the other hand, it is extremely important to have the engine, transmission, engine/trans harnesses and PCM matched. Doing it any other way can cause major headaches. Again, the Ex 5.0 groups with similar configurations break down to 96~97 or 98 only or 99~01.

Retaining the Ranger 4WD complicates the swap somewhat but it can be done. The Ex 4R70W AWD automatic from a year compatible with the engine is a good choice. It can either be adapted to the Ranger t-case or a larger t-case can be installed. Expect to do some driveshaft work in either case.

I recommend that you do some serious reading/research so you know what you're getting into. This is a well established swap and there are many threads and articles out there. Here are some links to get you started:
