It depends on the type of 302 you want to put in it. The old 302's like in the Foxbody Mustangs are modular so the cylinders are at 45 degree angles. It is possible put one of those in your Ranger, but it requires tons of pounding out walls. The v6's in the Ranger already are non modular, so the cylinders are at a 60 degree angle. But the new alluminum 302's that are in the 2011 Mustangs are non modular so I can imagine they would fit in a Ranger. I'm currently saving for a race vehicle and I'm planning on a 2wd regular cab Ranger and want to drop a 302 in it.

PATS started in the explorers in 98. The 5.0 swap into your truck from an 98 is the simplest. Just find a complete 98 exlpoder and swap everything over. All of them will bolt in the same locations. It should only take you about a weekend to do so with the help of a buddy (one that is auto mechanical savy).

There is so much misinformation in this post, I don't even know where to begin.

There's a bit more to it than that for a 98 Ex engine into a 2003 Ranger. Here are a few items:
  • converting the Ranger's returnless fuel to the Explorer's return fuel
  • converting Type E PATS to Type B PATS
  • different speedometer wiring and correction
  • engine harness differences
  • charging harness differences
  • mismatched power steering hose fittings
Using a 99~2001 Ex 5.0 would make it a little easier because both the 99+ Ex 5.0 and the 98+ Ranger are mechanical returnless but the other items still need attention.

Also, swapping the Ex 5.0 engine, transmission and t-case into a Ranger 4x4 would eliminate low range and force full time AWD. Keeping the Ranger's part time 2-speed case behind the E 5.0 and 4R70W is possible but requires an expensive adapter, an oiling conversion kit and new driveshaft lengths.

Assuming 2WD to 2WD or 4WD to AWD, a 99~01 Ex 5.0 powertrain swap into a 99~00 V6 Ranger could conceivably be done in a weekend by a knowledgeable person working from a complete enough donor. It would also require a bit of luck.
