Default Engin swap

Hi new here, but not to rangers. I have a 87 ranger with a 4cyl and 5 speed manual trans it is way underpowered for me, is it possible to drop a v-8 into it like maby a 289 out of a mustang or a crate motor but crate notors are EXPENSIVE so i would like to stick to one out of a mustang or somthing.

Easiest swap is an explorer 302 its basically bolt right in you can put any v8 you want for it but the 4.6l and 5.4l swaps are really hard to do and kinda expensive

87 Should of had the 2.8l v6 option and as far as the ranger transmission holding up to a 302 its not gonna happen i dont even think its possible to get it to fit to a 302 if you want a manual transmission youll need a t-5 out of a mustang for a 5 speed or try and find a 4 speed if you wanna go auto then just use the tranny out of the expo

Thanks for this great info, I think I will just go for a v-6 since it will bolt right in, and I don't need a load of power.

well it will take time thats for sure and if you can find an pre-2001 expo with a v8 motor you should just be able to drop it in switch out the wiring harness and ECU and be good to go it will take awhile to do the swap tho most people say 2wks+

Some of the non-beamed Rangers - 98+ 4cyls need special motor mount adapters to be machined. Just need to figure out if you have torsion bar or coil spring suspension.

Yes, swapping an OBD-I system into an OBD-II truck is not going to be easy!

what about a mustang 302 wiring harness and computer change to the ranger?

----------

pre 2001 expo? does that plug right in? if so block to piston to head and cams to efi could be adjusted to influence the situation? only looking for 250-300 hp to play with. or i could just fix my 4 and just go buy a mustang but wheres the fun in that.

----------

expedition engines drop in easier? bout to get sum books on wiring .!!!

I wld consider an alternate vehicle as a "toy" for V8 conversion as with the 4-clangers mpg is worth its weight in gold.. I get 29mpg in my '99 2.5L
