Default 302.

How hard would it be to drop a 302 in a 1987 2wd ranger?

Not as hard as it is time consuming. But this is given you know some basic automotive stuff. If you've never swapped an engine, may take a very long time or may never complete it. Lots to it that might not be apparent at face value. Can get expensive also.

the last year of the 302 in the mustang was 95...if its the motor out of a 98 then it would be a modular 4.6 and would be a lot harder

you can put a 4.6l in it it will just be more expensive you need a stand alone ecm for it and a diffrent one for the tranny unless they are from the exact same vehicle then the ecm should be good for both just a ton of wiring to do, post a picture of the motor up here

Yes you could but you would have to swap the wireing harness, intercooler, tranny, and instal a intank fuel pump with the engine. Trust me the 302 swap would be alot easier exspeialy if you gona go carbed.
