Re: chevy 5.3l? what would be involved
There are no kits available, so welding on motor mounts and perches are up to you. Trans crossmember may also need to be addressed.
You'll need all the stuff the street rodder guys need, so you'll wanna hit up someone like Painless Performance for one of their GenIII LS swap stand alone harnesses and computer. Making that engine talk to your gauges, that's a whole nother issue. I suggest a custom set up using electric 2 1/16" gauges from someone like Auto Meter. You may lose your ABS. You'll need a trans and driveshaft work too.
I honestly can't really name anyone who's done a GenIII swap in a Ranger....it's all been GenI old school stuff that only require like 6 wires. lol.

Re: chevy 5.3l? what would be involved
You would nned somebody to disable pats or do an ecu/harness swap, alot of work, and a modern chevy motor would make an ecu swap difficult, with a modern ranger it is truley best to stick with a ford motor, that way the wiring and set-up should go smoother. Im guessing only way to make a chevy 5.3 swap simpler is to convert it into a carb setup and try to remove nearly all sensors so you'll only have to hook up a temp, speedo, tach, oil pressure and fuel gauges up, avoiding the complicated mess of crap

If a 5.3 is like a 4.6l your lookin at 600 bucks or so to switch it to a carb setup I would just look for a 302 less hassle all around

Second the beating. Chevy in a Ford? Why insult the best freaking company in the business with garbage motor company and their junky 5.3L that the cam phases knock in after 150k miles... and lose compression over time and HP.

Re: chevy 5.3l? what would be involved
If you can get past the PATS, is it possible. But need to watch the length, oil pan, engine width, headers, etc. Going to have to make your own motor mounts. Only way to know for sure is to test fit it in there w/ the trans.. I am sure there is some aftermarket wiring you could get to keep it EFI. I think it would be cool, but it's not going to be cheap or easy (that's a 327 in my avatar in a Pontiac - sold it tho). Not real loyal to ONLY Ford, all manufacturers have produced junk at one time or another..

Re: chevy 5.3l? what would be involved
if your looking for power put in a stroked 351. not much diffrent than putting in a 302. there a little wider but with custom headers or madfide steering linkege they fit just as easy. my 1997 has a 393 with afr heads, hyd cam,750 carb,c-4 trans and 9inch. it dynoed 380 at the rear wheels.
