so i might have a way of converting my ranger to a v8 i have been reading up on it and i have found a 99 explorer with the v8 and all parts. i just want to know is it really worth the swap ? is the horsepower alot better, hows torque on one? what kind of gas milage can i expect?

In my opinion and from what I have seen from local people I know, keep the 4.0 as long as its maintained it will last you alot longer. That was one reason I bought my Ranger with a 4.0.

most v8 swaps or for a a 4 banger or a small v6 like a 2.9l or a 3.0 because if your going to do an engine swap might aswell put in a v8 but your not going to see as drastic a change if your switching from a 4.0 to a v8 so i would just keep the 4.0

Correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe this at all. I have seen the 5.0 in a Ranger around town here and there is no contest. The thing hauls and the feel of a V8 would be like night and day to the feel of the V6 IMO

Depends who you ask. 5.0L is a good engine for going fast. 5.0Ls are just as reliable as any other engine out there. 5.0L for aftermarket, it's cheaper, more abundant, there is much more. It makes more sense to me as a platform to modify, lots you can do. Nothing wrong with a 4.0L, but it's hard to beat 2 more cylinders. I have a mild 5.0L in my '88.. Got tired of blowing money on my old 2.9L V6.

I say go for it. If you don't gain a shit load of horsepower, you still have that coolness factor of saying your Ranger has a V8.

Think there's a few write ups on the swap around. Engine swap generally aren't very basic. But anything can be accomplished with time.

Here is a write up for example:

that the best reason to do a v8 swap, parts. You can build up a 2.3, 3.0 and 4.0, but building up a 5.0 is cheaper and easier. But the biggest problem is drivetrain, transmission, driveshaft, rear axle and then suspension. but when its said and done, your ranger will be doing 0-60 in 6-7 seconds or faster. I had a v8 ranger once, the speedo was off but i know it was fast by how much it threw me in my seat, and once you driven a v8 ranger, any normal ranger is too slow. I went from 302 HO to 3.slow and it aggravates me every time
