Default 1998 5.0 explore into a 2002 ranger 4.0

Will a 1998 302 Ford explorer as a donor vehicle work with a 02 ranger or do I need a later explore.

Any '96 - '01 5.0 Explorer makes about as good a doner as any other.

All combinations have challenges to overcome.

PATS, a speed signal, a/c control logic and fuel system pressure and return type all have to be addressed but each challenge is well documented with possible solutions.

To take a 5.0 AWD Expo and convert the transmission to RWD is even possible (or RWD to AWD or 4WD) so there really are no "bad" doners unless the doner has been all but flogged to death and the expectation was for a plug and play, get 100k trouble free miles from it.

Ok i was reading on one of the threads on what is all needed and ik what I'm up against I just don't know how similar the system from a 96 expo to a 02 ranger is what I'm trying to find out like the pats system

Hmmmm:

PATS. Expo has an extra module behind/above glove box. Will need to get wired in.

Speed signal. 02 Ranger uses the PCM to generate a speed signal from the ABS sensors. The Expo uses the ABS ecu. You can graft in the Expo ABS ecu and g-force sensor, graft in a 4 cyl Ranger GEM, mod the 98 Expo transmission to drive a VSS or Dakota Digital has an ABS to Speed signal box.

A/C -- Very different control logic. In Ranger, the dash switch is wired to the PCM and the PCM has full control if the a/c clutch relay. On the Expo, the dash switch is wired to the a/c clutch relay and the PCM is simply a on/off switch in series with the high and low pressure switches.

Fuel ststem. 02 Ranger uses a 56 psi fuel ststem wirh a pressure regulator in the fuel tank and a fuel return to the FPR coming from the 3rd nipple on fuel filter. Expo uses a 34 psi system with FPR on the fuel injector rail and the return going back to tank from the FPR. The Expo PCM can't handle the higher fuel pressure.

I had to run a return line on my 2000 ranger back into the tank.
