Perhaps check your two speed sensor locations. One on the tailshaft and one on the rear differential.

*Edit*

Did some research. Saw where your gem in your dash is going to need some attention. It's looking for signals your new setup doesn't provide.

Yep, its a gotcha.

The Ranger speed signal left with the 01 Ranger PCM but the Explorer speed signal stayed with the Expo ABS system.

Handfull of options:

If capable, add a gear driven VSS to the back of the transmission. Simple 2 wire hook up as long as outout shaft can drive the VSS gear and tailcone can support the VSS.

Use a similar year 4 cyl Ranger GEM module. Again, only a few wiring changes and the new GEM will take the ABS signal and convert/generate a speed signal.

Graft in both the ABS and G-Force sensor from the Expo

Dakota Digital has an aftermarket solution or two.

An old Samsung tablet or note series phone and the digiHUD app. Phone doesn't need to be active, download the app via wireless router and it just works.

Has clock, direction, trip and max/average speed.

Velcro it to the dash.

Not what you wanted but it will instantly keep you from being pulled over for speeding while you are resolving the big picture.

Its more than knowing how fast you're going. Its the PCM that is controlling the transmission knowing how fast the vehicle is going so it can manage the operation of the transmission.

No speed signal the PCM can recognise and it won't know what to do with the transmission.

I guess that would pose a slight problem, but from the post I assumed he was driving the vehicle, how else would he know the speedo isn't working?

So a 1998 Explorer has vehicle speed setup like this:

ABS sensor on diff------>ABS (converts to 12V square wave)-----> PCM, Cruise Instrument, Cluster, GEM.

Your 2001 Ranger is this :
OSS sensor on transmission (output shaft speed)------> PCM------> Cruise, Instrument Cluster, 4wd module.

As others have said you need something to translate the raw signal to a 0-12V square wave. A simple way to do this is to add another GEM and splice into the raw speed sensor signal that goes from the ranger ABS sensor to the ranger ABS module.

Then just add power and ground to the gem and have the output go to all the other modules. PCM, Cruise Cluster.

Here is a big question which 4x4 system are you using? Explorer or Ranger . Explorer is controlled by the GEM and Ranger in 01 is controlled by 4wd module.

For 98-00 Ranger GEM's you got 4 options:
CTM (central timer module) no power windows, no 4x4
GEM no power windows, 4x4
GEM power windows, 4x4
GEM power windows, no 4x4

I kinda believe some of those maybe the same hardware because if you go into their programming it has a selection for if it is 4WABS or RABS. I have a hunch that this determines if a vehicles needs speedometer conversion or 4wd control turned on in the module.

Good thing about adding the GEM to convert the speedometer signal is that you can calibrate your tire size using Forscan.

Call Dakota digital and tell them you are going to be splicing in the converter in parallel to your abs sensor. Tell them it's a 2 wire sensor that has a sine wave output) and you need to output a pulse wave to feed the PCM and cruise.

To tell you the truth I don't know if that module will work as from what I've read it's only a frequency modifier and doesn't modify shape of the signal.

I maybe able to send you a GEM to use to wire up just for speed signal. It's for a 4wd but I think I can program it to generate the signal for you.

Shoot me a pm. Give me a few days to see if it will work (gonna test in my truck that's 2wd). If it does I can program your tire size into it and add pigtails with just the bare necessity wiring (power, ground, input signal wires, and output)
