Default 3.0 to 5.0 in a 98 XLT 4wd

Read thru the threads and did a search, but still confused on the 5.0 swap.

I have a 1998 XLT 4wd 3.0 manual. What would be the best/easiest installation putting in a 5.0? The 3.0 is still running strong - never had one issue with it. But at 180,xxx I want to look at my options for replacement if and when the day comes. I also pull a small off road camper trailer, more power would be welcome.

NOTE: I went to the live axles in the front when I rebuilt the front end, and I did the Expo 8.8 rear axle swap, so it's beefed up for the 5.0. I would like to keep it a manual. TIA

The "manual" part is gonna be the hard part, as there were no manual 5.0L Explorers built TBOMK.

You will want to find a 98-01 Explorer so all the electronics talk to each other as needed & you get the GT40P heads on them.

Post progress with pics when you start/do it............

If your thinking of letting the 3.0 go when you start, please let me know. May be in the market for one soon. ;-)

So there is no way to do it with a manual tranny? What are the options here?

Grubb44 - will be quite a while until I do this if at all, unless the engine blows up tomorrow...lol. The 3.0 seems bulittproof....so far. Just underpowered, but that's what gears are for.

You can go manual. You need a V6 4.6 tranny from a 90s to early 00s F150 (forgot the exact years) but that'll bolt onto the 5.0.

There are others that you can use but this one keeps your shifter in the same location.

Thx for the info Kealel. Would you happen to know what the number of that tranny would be? Also you say it bolts up to the 5.0, so it would be the clutch assembly too? Do things mate up to the driveshaft?

Getting another tranny wouldn't pain me, since the plastic slave cylinder is the weak spot in the Ranger manual (already had it replaced once), and I have a syncro in 4th starting to fail.

I believe the tranny is a M5OD-R2 - basically a beefier version of what our trucks have.

I don't have the list with me atm, but I believe it uses a 5.0 F150 clutch kit and the same slave/master that our trucks have.

Not sure what you need to do for the driveshaft, never thought about that to research, but it may be worthwhile to have a custom one built anyways.

Thanks for the info Kealel. I'll keep it on file as I do more research.

**This applies to the torsion bar suspension. You will have to make further accommodations if otherwise.

I did the 5.0 > M5R2 swap and I dig it. You want the 01-03 f150 m5od-r2 transmission as that is the year range that places the shifter in the proper location. You can also get a Core / Hurst short shifter to shorten the "rowboat" style throw that is stock. You will clearly need a tuner to overcome pcm tranny communication issues. You can use a rear*driveshaft*from a 2000 expedition with the 5.4 because of its shorter length (my application is AWD/4wd), but you'll most likely have to get it resized like I did. You can use the front*driveshaft*from a 1999 expedition with the 4.6 as well. If staying 2wd, use the expedition 4.6 rear as it is longer. Have fun with the clutch pedal assembly, nothing special about that, it is pretty straight forward. I used an E550 master cylinder. It is bigger than stock, you just have to massage the square inlet width some on two sides to get it to fit. One note, it will save you time if you just unbolt the exhaust manifolds from the passenger side head when fitting the M5R2 up there. Those pipes are seriously unforgiving. Getting it past the pipes was probably the hardest part.

Study this thread thoroughly if you are serious and it will get you through like it did myself. It has plenty of pics.

I'm looking at doing the same with my ranger , I have 01 edge 2wd that turned 275k this week . She runs good but I can tell its age in power i also pull a lot of stuff, and have pondered a early 90s 5.0 . How hard is the swap electronically ? I'd like to keep fuel injection . I'm gonna use a 5 speed transmission so I won't have to deal with the electronics of that.

I'm wrapping up my 5.0 conversion in my 96 Ranger. It's 2wd and I found a 96 Explorer with a 5.0 2wd and swapped the entire drive train. I went from a 5 speed manual to the auto from the Explorer. The diff from the Explorer is limited slip so I swapped it in also with it's own springs, just had to change it from riding on top of the springs to under them. As far as computer I also swapped those out and plugging in the harnesses was as simple as unplug one and plug in the other.

I did a 1999 3.0 2wd manual to 1999 5.0 2wd auto and switching the from manual to auto was easier than programming pcm/tcm.
