Default Need info on possible 4.6 swap 2002 XLT

Hi my 2002 XLT standard cab 2.3 with manual transmission is in need of a new engine and transmission.
The engine has a noise once warmed up sounds like a slight rod knock
The transmission is worn and hard to find first I found lots of metal shavings. Both have 141k and apparently they were hard miles.

Anyways I found locally a 2011 4.6 v8 engine and transmission with harness and computer plus any and all mechanical items Attaching it to the car for 500 buck the engine and trans has 55k on it .

On the surface this seems like it may be a great candidate for a donor car but I am not sure if I will also need a explorer donor car for items that may not be the same

Any input would be appreciated BTW the engine and transmission will be out of a Grand Marquis

If you want v8, swap in a 5.0 from an explorer.

The mod v8's are too big for the ranger (big heads), it takes a ton of work for it to fit.

Thanks for the quick response I was hoping since the explorer used a 4.6 that it would be possible.

All the 5.0 explorers I have found are high mileage junk which would require the engine and transmission to be rebuilt before install I guess I may have to give up on the idea of saving my Ranger

I am not stuck on the idea of a V8 I am just trying to save my Ranger

The 55K 4.7 mod v8 for 500 bucks is just so hard to pass up on.

^^. Plus, much of the expo wiring is the same as the ranger. Even then, swapping to a v8 is a massive undertaking.

The 5.0 is a solid motor. I wouldn't be afraid of swapping one in the mid 100,000 mile range. Especially if the current motor is toast.

The 4.6 is an easy fit, as long as you don't need a/c, brakes, steering, exhaust manifolds and a radiator.

Yea, it's been done, but not without a ton of mod and fab work on all the bits that want to occupy the same places at the same time!

I was able to snap up a crashed but running/driving '96 5.0 Expo for $650. Got over $300 in scrap for it after selling nearly $300 in parts from it and still had all the 5.0 bits for the swap.

Do you need it to be street legal? Would swapping an older motor (96-01) into your 02 work with your state inspection? If so, I 4th the 5.0 just check your local laws first.

Yeah we do not have state inspection any longer. We used to have mechanical and emissions inspection then they canned both inspections.

I think I may have saved the engine in my Ranger, however I will be saving up for a 5.0 swap or a rebuilt OEM Ford 2.3 engine

I am in way to deep on my truck to give up on it.
