V8 swap follow ups?
So, I was hoping some of those who have done their v8 swap can give us a follow up on what its like after the fact.
Information I'm looking for:
How long ago was your swap done?
Which v8 did you use (year of vehicle it was pulled from etc)
Which transmission did you use?
What things changed afterwards (fuel economy, etc)?
aprox. how much did you spend total on it?
and if you were to go back in time would you do it again?
anything else you would like to share?
Its something I'm considering, and have been reading up on the threads, but few seem to follow up once the work is done, or if they do its on other mods.

Re: V8 swap follow ups?
Hmmm, did mine about 2 1/2 years ago, about 40,000 miles or so.
I usesd a crashed '96 Expo with it's RWD 4R70W transmission as the doner.
Only real surprise was fuel economy. Went from about 19 mpg combined use to 16 mpg.
Possibly my only regret was swapping in a set of 3.27:1 gears when I rebuilt the Expo's 8.8" LSD from the OEM 3.73's.
Oh yea, the other regret. Not doing it sooner!
Could have done the job for nearly free it I'd not rebuild most pieces as part of the swap. Between selling the Ranger's engine and transmission, a fair amount of the bits and pieces from the Expo and then the empty hulk of the Expo, the only real cost was the custom 2 piece drive shaft my local drive train shop insisted on. Finding a breakers yard drive shaft that would work, or be shortened would have dropped my costs into the profit catagory.
Still, I still say that this is a truck Ford darn well should have built and marketed. Mine is not a hot rod or race truck, but is effortless and stress free to drive.

Re: V8 swap follow ups?
Thanks! You would probably have had better fuel economy with the higher gears, especially if you went with bigger tires.

Re: V8 swap follow ups?
My question is how hard is it on a 4x4. I'd love to drop the 5.0 mustang v8 into my 96 4x4 sport

Re: V8 swap follow ups?
I don't think it would be any more or less work with a 4x4 than a 2wd. I have considered swaps for my XJ as well and for that it is the same amount of work regardless. Unless you are swapping out transfer cases, but that is only a small amount of work more.

Re: V8 swap follow ups?
If I had a garage I could work in I'd do it. I could get a 5.0 mustang engine tomorrow for 179.00. That would make this truck far nicer to drive
----------
For now I'm gonna try the 4.6l tb swap and see if that helps any. 30$ for a tb. I need to figure what 4.6 engine besides the rustang I can get that out of

Mine's a 98 Std. cab 4x4 that took me a few months from purchase (Sept 15) to get my donor vehicles and it was finished middle of July 16.........
Used 00 Explorer AWD 5.0L engine & trans, the 4x4 chassis I used had 3.73's that I stayed with, as the Expo had 3.55's. Complete swap was a bolt-in.
Only mod I did was the exhaust, ran true duals from cats back into 40 series Flowmaster dual in - dual out and tailpipes out the back where the spare used to be that dump just before the rear bumper. Just personal preference!
Don't pay much attention to MPG, but seems to be bout the same a the lame 3.0L before it. But hey, it don't lack for getty up & go!
I've got approx. $2700 into the truck from start to finish to include vehicles purchased.

Re: V8 swap follow ups?
here is my 1994 with a 347 it makes 508 hp at the flywheel. I did custom headers that go out over the frame. I don't think ill ever be done with it. I stopped adding up stuff about 15,000. I'm looking at doing a new 5.0 motor and auto transmission out of a 2015 mustang gt.

Re: V8 swap follow ups?
That is a sick ranger!
all of the v8 swaps are.
I'll admit that i'm pretty conflicted, part of me wants to get a v8 exploder, yank the engine, rebuild it and put it in.
Part of me would LOVE to get a coyote and put it in (from a newer mustang), and another part of me would love to get an eco boost, just to have something different, and I have a plethora of 4cyl turbos in my life and I have a strong affinity to them.

Re: V8 swap follow ups?
V8 ranger doesn't make much sense to me unless it as actually seeing a race track on a regular basis, or is for offroad use.

I was not referring my comment towards any Ranger in particular just stating a general opinion
