Default explorer motor ?

my friend got a ranger with a explorer 5.0 and transmission. it has not been wired up but can he just wire the + wire to the battery and the - wire up and it work. does he have to have the key from the explorer ?

Depends: '96 and '97 Explorers did not have PATS but the '98 - '01's will need PATS wired in and key that matches the PCM and PATS module.

After that, I understand the PCM also needs to have the fuel pump relay wired in.

Then yes, PATS is a player.

Couple paths:

Add the PATS module from the doner. Should be able to re-use the Ranger's type E key sensor but will need type B keys. Easiest if the original 99 Expo keys are available.

I believe FORSCAN now includes the ability to program in keys so a lack of original Expo keys is not a deal breaker. Type B keys are readily available on-line.

Some Ford dealers are amicable to using the Explorer key protocols on a modded Ranger, but a tow and hourly rates plus the keys can add up.

Another option is a re-tune of the PCM to eliminate PATS. I've read of at least one guy that foynd a mail order solution for that. Sent off his PCM with $200, was returned with PATS turned off.
