Thinking of buying another ranger and doing a 5.0 swap what one should I buy I hear 4cyl is easiest but want to be sure and also how must should I assume the swap should cost with buying the 5.0 engine and trans ?

Didn't want the hassel of havin to find a certain 2wd trans & modifyin the driveshaft, all added expense.

With an Edge 2wd or 4x4 chassis the Explorer stuff is a bolt in with NO MODIFICATIONS NEEDED except for your desired exhaust.

I must be missing something, Rat Ranger: are you saying that a 5.0 won't (easily) fit into a 2WD Ranger?
What I saw in some other posts suggested getting all of the electronics AND the transmission from the engine donor vehicle as the 5.0 engine electronics wouldn't speak to the stock 4cyl or 3.0/4.0 transmission.
I'm thinking about a swap so this could be vital information.

=====================
An AWD 5.0L Expo drivetrain WILL NOT be a direct bolt-in when using a 2wd coil springed suspension Ranger.

Different mounts, oil pan, and you would have to find a 2wd trans from an F150 or Mustang which required different mount & cross member from what I've read.

Research here and/or TheRangerStation.com

Getting an Explorer 5.0 into a coil spring Ranger is not that tough. One of the hard parts is finding a V8/302 RWD doner.

An AWD 4R70W transmission can be rebuild to RWD spec, but requires a new tailcone and output shaft.

Custom mounting plates can be DIY'd from flat plate and there are a couple options for an oil pan.

A 4 or 6 cyl transmission won't fit or hold up if it would bolt up to the engine. Shoot, not even the std Ford 7.5" diff is really not a good idea.

The generic Ford Performance Parts rear sump oil pan will work -- but not with the OEM Explorer front catalytic converters. Also, it can interfere with the steering rack unless the engine is spaced upwards at the engine mounts.

The OEM Explorer 5.0 steel or aluminum pans should work if the engine is lowered into place without the transmission.

I modded a steel Expo 5.0 pan by moving the lower front edge of the pan back almost to the drain plug. Getting it oil tight afterwards was a chore but the engine and transmission can go in as a unit. The oil pickup needed to move back, I used a generic rear sump pickup rather than re-work the pickup from the 5.0 Expo.

GOOD info WIN and your posts concures with my statement:
