Default A/C question!

Hello everyone, this question is about my mustang but over the years I've learned how informative everyone here is so why not ask it on this forum! At first this didn't bother but the more I think about it, the more it does...

SO! My PSI was 30, which is okay but I wanted around 35-40 so I got some 12oz R-135 and slapped on a gauge but the damn PSI never changed even after putting ALL the can in it. Annoying but that's not my issue. The issue is now when I turn the AC on, when the compressor kicks in, there's a very loud thud noise, sounds like I ran over a small child, it almost sounds like it is coming from under the car and the dash. The car also acts like I hit the brake when it comes on. Overfilled maybe? It still blows very cold air and cycles fine. It didn't do this before and now I'm all pissed.

Did you run a gauge on the hi and low side?

Is a really bad thing to not use both gauges, your high side can be through the roof and you'd never know with the cheap single gauges. In fact I can't believe they sell those damn things.

As for the symptoms, doesn't sound good. I'd make sure your pressures are good on both sides before self destruction.

It was just a low pressure gauge setup but it was that AC pro one so I figured it would do well since its way more $ than the others but nope! Guess not. I'll call a shop tomorrow and have them look at it and probably never touch my AC again

Lol
That's why they shouldn't sell them, it's misleading.
You can get affordable gauges from hf, not great but hey the job dove. Then you'd have to get your specific pressure specs.

Overcharged systems will have an abnormally high low side reading. This, provided the gauge readings (really should have high side) were taken with the engine and blower under the correct conditions, and within reason, the outside air temp should be at least warm enough that a person would run A/C.

I love those AC pro cans!!! They work great!! For getting people to come see me so I can fix their AC right.

I have no problem using one of those cans to top off a system if it only needs a couple ounces and I'm out in the field. But I always am checking the pressures with a real manifold gauge set. They're cheap.

I think I paid around $120 for this one off a tool truck. I think you can purchase this exact kit for like $80 everywhere else. Then there are even cheaper ones on the market.

Either way it pays to do it right. Because it's not cheap to have a professional fix it. On top of the fact that when we recover we recover everything you put in plus what was already there, after the repair is complete and we charge it the right amount you just gave us however many ounces or in some cases pounds the system was overcharged.

I make life easy these days. No little cans, instead, it's much easier and faster to just drain system and charge by weight, the weight being specified on the sticker under the hood. No guessing and predictable results.

You charge the system by refrigerant weight if you want to do it properly. Charging by pressures is the ballpark way of doing it.
Once it's up and running 40-45 degree air out of the center vents is ideal.

Wouldnt you still add through gauges when you add by weight?
And unless your systems empty, you would need a way to recover it, unless your saying just to dump it and start over if it's low?
Just asking, I don't do AC work for a living.
