The searching I found indicated that the 1997 Explorer was a split year 1996/1998 style on some parts (Didn't know if I would have issues with PATS). I have a chance to get one for $500 with bad transmission. I didn't know if it would be worth it. Thanks, -Matt

easy way to find out is to check the heads. 98-01 are gt-40P heads versus gt-40 for pre 97. Just bc its second part of the year, doesn't mean automatically it's a 98-01version. Yes they did switch mid year, but it was a funky year where I think they just used what parts they found! Haha Motor alone is worth it, even if you don't end up using everything else. Hell its a spare motor and parts! Wish I could find one that cheap, I'd buy em all day long!
