Default Engine Swap?

I am at the point where I need a new engine. My 4.0 OHV v6 is toast, I have half a piston missing and a blown head, and a failing transmission. I've been debating on weather to upgrade or replace it with another OHV. I've heard people putting expo v8 in their Rangers, probably go that route. I've been debating on going small block diesel. I'm watching craigslist for expo sports with the v8, but with little luck. What engines have people swapped in their Rangers. Any one put a diesel in there's? Any help, insight or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Default Re: Engine Swap?

Never were Explorer Sports with the V8, only the full size 4 doors so only way to find a V8 Sport is to find someone elses conversion.

Yes, a number of different diesels have been stuffed into Rangers. The Mercedes 300 turbo, VW TDI, Cummings 4BT as well as a Ford Powerstoke or two are all on the list.

Not sure how well the Ranger holds up to the torque of the larger options but some of the smaller options fit and perform well.

Cheapest option is to swap in another OHV engine. If you do a v8 swap from an expo, pull the trans, computer and wiring harness off the expo as well. That way it'll be will be mostly drop in. IIRC expos are either 2wd or awd, no (or rare) 4wd.

Diesel swap will open your wallet a lot. The 4BT motor alone goes from 3k-10k due to it being popularized. Everything will be custom as well. Your truck will be down for awhile.

You're a lucky one sir! 98-01 are the easiest 5.0 swaps out there. Nearly plug and play from a 98-01 explorer. Will need the motor, trans, ecm, wiring from the starter to battery, the 4.0 radiator will work with the 5.0, nearly identical to the 5.0 radiator. Can use a 4406 from a 90s f150 to get true 4wd but will need a custom rear driveshaft. Can use a longer one and have it cut down to what you need for around 100 bucks. Front drive shaft from the same 90s 150 is what you would use with it. Otherwise you have to stick with the power robbing awd transfer case. In that you can reuse your front drive shaft and swap front yokes from the expo drive shaft to the ranger one to work. The driver side motor mount plate needs to be re drilled as the holes are backwards from the 5.0 to the ranger mounts. Your best bet is to get a full expo donor and strip it down bc you'll need the keys, pats module and ignition out of the expo to put into the ranger. Check my build, I've got a few tip in there from my swap or there is a real good read on The Ranger Station about the 5.0 swaps. Diesels are gonna cost ya some money in fab and getting the parts, not impossible but will cost money.

Win: thanks for the info I would have been looking for a v8 on a sport for days. Interesting I have more options for diesel then I thought. A lil out of my range tho. Looks like I'm need to find a v8 expo.

2006_FX4: if I'm going to replace my engine, then I might as well upgrade. Thank for the heads up, now I need a doner truck.

Rangerdaddy: awesome advice, shouldn't be two hard now. I'll check out your build. Didn't think about ranger station, I'll check that out too.
