Ok so i have the timing cover off, if i line up the marks on the cam gear and the crank gear like you would when installing them will that be tdc on an intake stroke or an exhaust stroke? I wanna do this right the first time so im not setting the carb on fire

I've never seen a cam timing set that set the cam to TDC #1 cyl on the exhaust stroke.

But, I have seen a timing set that without following the instructions, would have been intuitive to time on the exhaust stroke.

So, assume it's on compression but then verify by watching the valves (or cam lobes) on rotation.

So if it is set up properly it will be on a compression stroke when lined up? And just double check that both valves are shut for cylinder #1 right?
