2000 4.0 ranger to a 2000 5.0 explorer swap
Well to start off i know their are lots of v8 swaps but i cant really find one for a 2000 automatic ranger to a 2000 automatic explorer. And im guessing that because its the Same year it should make things go more smoothly that something else. Tell me what i am going to be running into and what will be going wrong?
----------
And also this will be an over the winter swap so i will have all winter to peck away at it if i want. Or should i bring it to a mechanic so they can quick get it done with the right tools. And if i did that about how much would they charge?

First things first. Do some research to see if the swap is even legal where you live

Then research the actual process.
Research research and do more research

Re: 2000 4.0 ranger to a 2000 5.0 explorer swap
A 2000 Expo 5.0 into a 2000 Ranger should be a fairly straight forward swap. Same PATS system, same speed signal system, same fuel pressure system.
If the Ranger has a coil spring front suspension, you'll need some custom engine mounting plates.
Nearly everything else including the cats will come from the Expo.
A handful of minor wiring differences (get an EVTM for each the Ranger and Expo) and everything pretty much bolts into place.
I suggest using the Expo A/C evap and condenser to orifice tube hose, but the Ranger pair will work, just a bit tight to the exhaust.
Probably easier to swap the door locks and ignition cylinder to keep from having to deal with the expense of getting new keys cut and programmed into the PCM, but, if you've got 2 oem keys for the Expo, you can use those to program in your current Ranger keys.

on a scale of 1-10 how difficult would this process be?

Re: 2000 4.0 ranger to a 2000 5.0 explorer swap
9.5?? No way!! Everything is nearly plug and play or direct bolt in.
More like 5.5. Very little fabrication involved, pretty basic wiring. Only exhaust system and on extended Rangers the driveshaft are custom.
No, its not "easy" but if you're up to dropping a transmission and pulling an engine, its all pretty straight forward.
But, research and preparation are needed for any project of this scope.

Re: 2000 4.0 ranger to a 2000 5.0 explorer swap
i think a number on a 1-10 scale based on difficulty is rather hard to make.. too many variables... patience, skill, knowledge, tools, wallet size, even where you live could have an impact on how "hard" or "easy" a swap could be. so OP, if you feel confident you can pull a motor and trans on two vehicles and drop one into one of those vehicles then troubleshoot any issues that you may come by (surely there will be at least one) then by all means this swap could be a 1/10. if your tool set includes a ratchet and 10 piece socket set and the furthest you've delved into the workings of a motor is an oil change then this will certainly be a 9 or 10/10. its all respective to the individual
