Default my v8 ranger is gutless

so i traded my 91 bagged ranger with a 2.3 for a 85 ranger with a 79 302 v8. and its gutless. i have no idea whats wrong with it. i am told it has 4.11 gears so it should just light up the tires like crazy. but it has a hard time even doing a brake stand and its only a one wheel wonder. when i am doing 55 the tach says 3700 rpm so it has to have a low gear can anyone tell me what heads are better so i can get more power out of it. and i forgot to mention that it has a c4 and edelbrockf4b intake and holley 600cfm 4 barrel.

as far as the one whell wonder thing if its an ranger 8.8 it could be an open 4.10 gear which is why only one tire would spin and you can put on 351w heads if you get diffrent head bolts or sleeves for the ones you have, as far as a cheap better head would do but i dont know why a 302 in a ranger wouldnt kick yah in the pants everytime you hit the gas unless its clapped out

What size tires do you have on your ranger. Sometimes tire size matters. I know. When I did my 302 conversion with a c-6 tranny I lifted the whole body up but still had my old low profile tires on it & it ok. But when I put 225/70R14 tires on it it was awesome. i have 7.5 axle with low gears. Did some timming things to it & it rocks now. Go to a performance place & they can help you out. i have a summit intake & a holly 4bbl carb & a dist.cap & rotor from summit too. Its a mallory. Hope i have help you out.

try too much fuel...either build the motor more or put a smaller carb on it; but other than that it could be a number of things

If it pulls hard in second and third....you think it could be a problem with first gear?

Late 70's was a bad time for the v8's. With all the gas shortages and enviromental hippies protesting.

IMHO, heads, cam, and headers. If you don't have them. The cam is really where the power will come from as the cams used then were really garbage.

As far as 3700 rpm, that's the non od c4. You will need a trans swap to get a good cruising rpm.

mine had an edelbrock intake manifold, and a holley carb, no a/c or powersteering, it had a good amount of power.

should be fine with the 600 carb. Is it as VS or DP? Does it have a flat spot off idle?
As far as heads I would look for GT-40s off a 97+ 5.0L explorer smaller chamber to raise comp. ratio.
Avoid the GT-40Ps require different manifolds.

I think the GT40s from the Cobra Mustang were slightly smaller chambers than the 96-97.5 GT40 Explorer heads. But still are a good upgrade. He may also want to change pistons if they are dished.

On my '87 lo-po 5.0L, I did cam (B303), GT40 heads (upgrade from E6SE), 1.6:1 Crane roller rockers, flat top forged pistons with valve reliefs, and had ARP bolts installed in the rods. If I had to do it over (which I probably will eventually), I would have gone with a nice set of after market heads with a milder more HO like cam (But I like the B cam, it has a bit of lope to it).

But for all you spend on building up a engine that produced low numbers, best bet is to get a roller HO bottom to start with, good aftermarket heads, good carb intake with a good 600cfm carb. Heads are where the power is at.
