'01 5.0 manual info gathering
Hey guys, just here gathering info, got a job that pays pretty well (finally,) so I can begin saving/gathering info and parts for an improvement on my poorly-running Ranger (I swear it makes 8 hp and it slips in 1st and 2nd.) Anyway, is there an exhaustive list of what I need to swap in a 5.0 to an '01, and then to shove an M5ODR2 behind it? I'm talking full shopping list so I can hit the wrecking yard in one go for peripherals, as it's not very close, and I want as little downtime as possible for this truck, as it's my daily. I know I'd need a '98-'01 5.0, and an ~'00 M5R2 but much passed that I'm not sure.

look up v8 swap in a newer ranger and it will give you a guide.
Best bet is to start with an entire donor explorer so you have everything to get it started. Next would be to look up 5 speed 5.0 explorer. There is a really good write up on the explorer forums about it. Must be a m5r2 from at least a 97-03 v6 f150, but for stock fitment of the shifter it should be a 98.5-01 m5r2

Yeah, I've been reading up on how to do the swap, I was just hoping someone had a full list of parts, cause I can really only find parts lists that include buying an entire expo, or similar, which is rather expensive.

no. Buying a wrecked but running explorer is a lot cheaper than piecing together an explorer part for part.

Re: '01 5.0 manual info gathering
Can I just get one of these wrecked but running expos at the local pick & pull or will it take some hunting?

hunting potentially. You can also try Copart . Com. That's where I got mine and I'm about to tear in to it

Re: '01 5.0 manual info gathering
I found my wrecked/running Expo on craigslist for $650 -- darn hard to beat. By the time I sold the Ranger engine/trans, the interior and other bits from the Expo and scrapped the empty husk, I was money ahead. Only the custom 2 piece drive shaft drove the conversion into the red.
Going with a 5 speed means a custom tune and you can turn off PATS at the same time.
But -- for your purposes, the '98 is the same as a '96/97 -- low fuel pressure system rather than high.
You'll probably want a VSS setup for the back of the transmission. The later Expo's used the ABS system for a speed signal, your Ranger uses the PCM for it. Mixing the 99/01 Expo with an 01 Ranger means no speed signal any where, adding the VSS is probably the easist solution.

Alright, so looks like the M5R2 has a VSS port as it is, but reading your reply, there'll be nowheres to send that signal TO, am I right? If so, how would I set this up?

Re: '01 5.0 manual info gathering
The VSS is a two wire hook up, and one is simply a ground.
The other functionally provides the same conditioned speed signal as the Expo ABS or Ranger PCM and simply wires into the same speed wiring as the other two systems.
If memory serves, the grey/black wire at pin #7 on the Ranger's 42 pin body to engine harness connector is the wire you'd tie the VSS into.
