Re: Possible Motor Swap for 2.3L 2009 Ranger??
If you install a same year or newer 5.0 coyote engine you have to take it to a state referee station and if you have all of the emissions components for that engine installed properly your approved swap will be registered with dmv and it show on your registration that your truck is a 5.0.

"Let your wallet take control of your imagination."
I say keep the 2.3 until the bearings are shot then do a 5.0 swap.
In the meantime I would find a 5R55E tranny from a junkyard.
That's just me, I do the cheapest things first, then when I put on my big boy underwear I do the big stuff.

You could always swap the auto for a 5 speed when it goes.

How plausible do you think it would be to do a Auto to manual swap? If it's not too much To handle I may do that when my tranny finally goes.

Re: Possible Motor Swap for 2.3L 2009 Ranger??
Pretty simple on rangers find one with the same engine at a junk yard, grab the tranny, fly wheel, clutch pedal assembly, computer, and possibly the drive shaft.

I mean those things last forever. My first ranger had 240,000 when It got totaled and the tranny still shifted smoothly afterwards. Gears never grinded, no rough noises. Truck was neglected for 17 years on maintenance and the tranny was perfect. That's the one thing I hate about my auto transmission, I'm always worried my transmission is going to give up one day. Especially at 146,000 with no regular fluid flushes.

Re: Possible Motor Swap for 2.3L 2009 Ranger??
Im really fortunate I can use my mom's residence in Florida for registration purposes- no emissions. In Texas I have a full vehicle inspection including underhood inspection and emissions via the obd port. I doubt I could legally put a 5.0 in mine.
Since I would want a manual, it will be difficult- autos are easier for a 5.0 swap. I could maybe find a mustang engine/tranny/pcm, but if I remember right the motor mounts are all off. The explorer v8 bolts into the ranger, but the trannys are autos. Id prolly need some adapter plates to mate the mustang tranny to the explorer engine. Then the pcm would be off. If i get an explorer pcm, id get a CEL becaust it would be looking for the automatic. Then of course id need a custom driveshaft and an 8.8 rear end.
And then id prolly need a lift to fit the manual (I know a ZF requires a lift- not sure on the T5 or other options). I dont need a lift as I use a truck to haul stuff, work, and commute. I do really like the idea of a built V8 in a Ranger though.

I'm in Texas as well and as stated before all you need is the assistance of a state referee. One you show that the vehicle still meets the inspection criteria you will be allowed to register and inspect the vehicle. I am working with one now before I go out and get the donor vehicle to make sure I dont invest alot of time and money into a truck I cant drive on the road.

Re: Possible Motor Swap for 2.3L 2009 Ranger??
Correction, I have been on the phone most of the day to get a solid 100% answer on this. In the state of Texas you dont even need a referee. As long as you have all the emissions equipment that the ranger had from the beginning you will pass. 96 and up explorers had all the same emissions parts so as long as you swap everything from the explorer to the ranger and have a dealership flash the computer with the rangers VIN number you have yourself a street legal V8 ranger.
