Default 1997 3.0 to 5.0 or similar engine swap and tranny

I just topped 200,000 miles on the truck recently and already had some tranny issues taken care of, engine has been running good but just waiting for it to go. I want to have a replacement fuel injected 5.0 or similar and newer manual 5 speed tranny ready. Does anybody have advise... would like to find something possibly rebuilt.

depends

straight swap no. 1st .... federal reg dont allow v8 in ranger as no where in its history wa it offered with 8 pistons.

but a custom title alters that limitation....

though that is not really an issue generally. most states dont even look at this that far...

but the other reg that requires the engine to be 97 or newer applies across in the general.

when its home built/hotrod/buggy titled though, its pretty easy to get it done legally, but buying insurance for it is the assbiter then.

most states dont really hassle yu to much, just put and match a veci from a 97 v8 on it with all the compatable emmissions equipment and most guys get by inspection.
