Question '99 xlt automatic 4x4 5.0l explorer swap questions

So I've been pondering this swap for the last month or so and looked at readily available info. From what I understand my year of ranger is the easiest to swap if I use the same year of explorer. My question is what do I all have to swap across? I know you have the engine and the PCM of course along with the motor mounts, transmission, radiator and hose, fan and shroud, a/c hoses, battery cable harness, throttle cable, cruise cable, high pressure power steering hose, exhaust manifolds, catalytic converter, airbox, MAF, zip tube, and fuel pressure regulator. Is there anything else I MUST swap across. I haven't found any additional info like what wiring I have to swap if any at all or if I'll have to re-gear my axles or totally swap them ect. ect.... Anybody care to shed some light?

Don't forget the pcm harness, you may want to swap axles too, i may be wrong but I think 3.0 rangers use the 7.5 inch rear axle, expos used the stronger 8.8.

I looked online and I believe I have the 8.8 if not I can switch it I plan on buying a totaled explorer that's not torn to pieces so I'll have most if not all the parts. When I switch I need to include all the external engine components like the water pump, alternator, ect. right?

Edit: I lied I have the 7.5

Looks like you're ready. Battery tray isn't on there. Looks pretty complete.

Only three harnesses total. Engine, Transmission, then the battery/starter/charging harness.

The only wiring modification I had to do was to the battery/charging/starter harness. I used the one from the 5.0 and spliced the Ranger plug onto it(cut it off the 3.0 harness). It plugs in right by the master cylinder and power distribution. Also had to de-pin one wire for the tach.

----------

I used the explorer 8.8 as well, after cutting/flipping/welding spring pads and shock mounts. Grab the parking brake cable if you do.

Just buy and strip an explorer/mountaineer, grab everything. I had more parts than I needed, scrapped what I didn't!

Was there a diagram for the tach wire detach? Or did you use a EVTM? How big of a pain was swapping the axle? Also did you use a 1999 mountaineer/explorer as well? Thanks for all the help guys!

No EVTM, I found the info searching the forums.

Yes I used a '99 explorer as well, but either one will work as long as it's 99-01 it's straight forward.

I did get my axle from my donor. You'll have to flip the spring pads (rangers are spring-over-axle; explorers are spring-under-axles) and move the shock mounts which requires welding. I'd also get it checked for straightness after welding, then re-build the internals. Again I found a diagram for easy measuring on the forums somewhere, but overall it's was painless.

Funniest part was: I mounted my old ranger 7.5 rear axle UPSIDE DOWN and BACKWARDS on the donor explorer in order to roll it out for the scrapper! LoL

I'll have to look around for the wiring info and the measuring then. I think I have it all figured out just need to find a decent donor! Any extra tips would be helpful if there's anything you can think of?

I'll probably have to do the same thing to roll my donor out haha!

Ditch the old clutch fan and shroud and find a nice electric fan and controller. I used a dual fan setup from a contour/focus/cougar I grabbed from a junk yard for $30 and a flex-a-lite variable speed controller. Low clearance and fits perfectly, controller is slick too. I can provide more info/pics if needed.

Craigslist is your best bet for a donor. <$1500 trucks are out there.

Good luck!

There's a few local auto salvage yards near me and Utah has a website like Craigslist specifically for Utah that has loads of vehicles so I'll start there. A lot of people say not to get an electric fan but I'm not sure why? I guess there's more room for error? Any pic's you can provide of installation or wiring would be pretty helpful if you could post what you have up!
