Default 5.0? or new ranger

i have a 1998 ford ranger 4.0 ohv with 4x4, body and frame are immaculate, currenty my truck has 150xxx miles, she still got life left in her, but one day the death of the 4.0 will come, i have been really interested in the 5.0 swaps people have been doing, i was wondering the steps, costs, parts, and work required to drop in a 5.0. i have a extreme emotional attachment to my ranger and would hate to have to get rid of her and get a new one, so i would love to bring her new life, ( new increased hp/ torque life ). so what would i have to do with the wiring, tranny, 4x4 etc if i was to give the old girl a transplant?

thanks, steve

Cheapest route would be find an expo to use as a donor you can get them wrecked for cheap look for an AWD or 4wd. Not sure if they had a 5.0 4wd but awe drive will work and just add the tcase. Lots of write-ups on info. But also check local emissions laws most places require same year or newer.

I think most here will be biased towards going with a 5.0.

For the most part, a 5.0 AWD from an Expo will be bolt in. But, your 98 has some challenges:

No PATS and high pressure fuel means no Expo will be an exact match.

You'll either need to mod to the lower pressure fuel system with a return to use a PATSless 96 or 97 doner or add the hardware and wiring of the later PATS to your Ranger. (or get a custom tune that turns off PATS).

Personally, I think modding the fuel system is easier and probably less costly than dealing with PATS but if your state requires same or newer year engines in modified cars, your hands might get tied.

If you go with a complete running Exp doner, PATS becomes less of an issue, you can take the original Expo key, receiver and module and bury them in the dash. Would not have to change steering columns or have PATS keys programmed in.

What doner you can find will likely mandate the challenges you need to overcome.
