If the engine is not too wildly built, you can use a pressure regulator to run a carb so you dont have to worry about fuel delivery. Im getting parts for my swap and am going to do a carb to simply get it up and running, then swap over to efi one day.

Honestly a fuel pump that doesn't need a regulator is about the same (if not cheaper) than a return style pressure regulator. I went the return style/stock pump route and determined that a low pressure electric pump that doesn't need a regulator would have been the cheapest way to go.

Carb as an excuse to get up and running is sort of moot when you factor in the time it takes to set up the timing and carb, EFI is just plug-and-play. If you want EFI later, get it now IMO. FWIW I run a carb, and I had a lot of time in tweaking everything in and still playing around try to get the best settings, but I have it close.

I've rode in a couple of V8 ranger and they were awesome. About how long did it take you pete to do the swap on your ranger? I've done S10 V8 swaps but never a ranger, is it about the same or are they completely different?

Hard to tell on time. I swapped bucket seats in, made a new gauge cluster, upgraded my sound system, etc all of which weren't needed.. It took a year though, and that's me working on it at my lesiure (read drinking beer ) and I moved in that time span and had to have the Ranger flat bedded to my new house. But nothing wrong with taking your time, I am happy with how it turned out.

Never swapped a SBC into a S-10, but a friend of mine had a 383ci in one. I have swapped a SBC into a 1985 Grand Prix and that was easier. All of the parts I had for the swap fit well, even the long tubes which were not for that car.

SBF swap into a Ranger, trouble spots are the headers (88400 hedmans - 89500 are tricky to work with on the passenger side, but possible), power steering box (90 degree oil filter relocation kit), steering linkage (depends on headers), and front end dress/cooling clearance (up to you ). There are 5.0Ls with a shorter front end dress, I would really reccomend going that route (like a 96-97.5 ex engine, short FEAD, roller motor, GT40 heads all in one).

Thanks for the tip. I kindly figured there would be a problem with the headers and a clearance issue with pulley system and radiator. I guess the headers would have to clear the steering linkage. The S10 was alot easier than what a ranger would be based on what you've stated though. The SBC in an S10 was damn near a bolt in.

body you can fit up too a 351w id say and tranny...you can use the stock motor, your going to need a strong transmission to hold up to the more power the v8 will have

4th on the 4spd and 4th on the 5spd are probably going to be both 1:1, I would just run the M5OD-R2 and have over drive.

rangerengineswap - forget about the factory transmission. see first response from rwenzing for info on a 5.0L swap into a '99 Ranger.
