The best fit in a 98+ Ranger is a 96~2001 Ex 5.0.
Easiest: 99~2001 V8 and 4R70W from a 2WD Explorer. This is electrically very similar to a 98 Ranger except it would need to have the PATS antitheft system added.
Next best: 96~98 V8 and 4R70W from a 2WD Explorer. This is elecrically very similar to a 98 Ranger but would need minor rewiring for the speedometer to work. There is no PATS to deal with which is a plus. On the negative side, the fuel system of the Ranger would need to be converted to 'return fuel' to work with the Explorer PCM and engine fuel system.
Since yours is a 2WD coil spring Ranger, either swap would need custom motor mount plates and probably driveshaft mods. The tach would need minor repin to make it read the V8 RPM. Using a 98+ Ex engine should make it easier to remain smog legal in most states.
