Default 1989 ford ranger "dinotruck" 5.0L build!

So the time has come to say Goodbye to the dreaded 2.9L engine in my ranger... Options were to either replace it with another 2.9, or go get a 5.0L! Obvious for me, I went and pilfered a 5.0L motor with transmission, alternator, wiring harness, power steering pump, and PCM from a 1988 Crown Victoria LTD at the local wreckers... Now I know I have some wiring to change over, will have to figure out how to house a digital speedo in the truck, have to mod my heater box, and such... Got lucky to find a pair of V8 mounts installed in a 92 ranger at the wreckers, so I snagged em for my rig, already upgraded to F150 suspension all the way around, and will be test fitting the drivetrain next weekend! Will post pics and update as soon as possible

Speedometer should not be that diffict.

More than a few Fords of the era had mechanical speedometers using a combo VSS/cable drive gear at the trans.

The VSS keeps the PCM informed about what's going on and the pass through cable drive keeps the dash in the know.

Digital for 88 shouldn't be to complicated may have to check and see if there was some kind of module to interpret the sensors output to transfer to the speedo but lots of aftermarket gauges now come with a kit that you can self calibrate for a bunch of different vehicles speed sensor outputs may just need to shop around for one. Plus being able to build your own cluster may be a plus.

Exactly so, changing the VSS to one with a pass through cable drive will keep your PCM and mechanical speedo happy.

I decided to ditch this project sadly... got a steal of a deal on a nicer newer truck, so a buddy of mine is buying the truck off me
