2.5L to 351W swap
My grandmother is giving me a 2000 Ford Ranger 2WD with the 2.5L inline 4. I had looked at swapping out to a 351W, possibly one stroked to 427. If I do this am I able to keep a manual tranny or do I need to put in an automatic? What other problems could occur?
Thanks,

Do not see why you cannot keep a manual tranny, would just need a beefier one (T5) than what the Ranger came with.

Thanks. Would I have to remove A/C or anything like that? I'd heard there might be heater box clearance problems as well.

That is beyond me, but I would not doubt it with the size of that engine.

You have to convert you new tranny over to hyd clutch. Or put a cable set up in your truck.
Make sure you do plenty of research before you tear it down. If I'm not mistaken the front suspension on the newer trucks makes it harder for header clearances.
As far as your heater box. You most likely will have to modify it alittle bit depending on where you set your engine. I heated mine up with a heat gun and pushed it in.

the 351w block is about 3 inches taller than a 302 block... your gona have to loose the heater. ive seen people cut a notch out of the heater for use with the 302 but i dont think this is possible with a 351 then again... ya never know untill you try it out

The only difference with the 351W swap is it's a little harder to find exhaust. It may be a taller and wider engine but it fits just a easy.

Go have a look in the rangerstation.com tech library, I think they tell you something about that swap. Also go to James Duff's site, I know he did a couple some years back.
Automatic, with a shift kit, a larger than needed aftermarket trans cooler, and floor shifter.
No more shifting when your hands should be doing something else. SKIRT!

Re: 2.5L to 351W swap
I am not positive, but I think the 351C or M are considerably wider. They are 90* blocks and the 289 threw 351W are 60*.
Something that will make a V8 swap in any RBV easier is a body lift. Raising the body 3" will give about 4" of clearance at the heater box, this will also help in accessing the spark plugs and exhaust manifolds.

Re: 2.5L to 351W swap
Dont recall the width of the Cleveland, but the Mdified was definately the wide one. It's actually the same block as the 400M. The 400M just had a longer stroke (.25 in longer)

Re: 2.5L to 351W swap
351 m is a 400 motor with a 351w crank and taller pistons and a taller deck making it the largest 351 engine out there outer size wise the 351c is the next biggest and the 351 Windsor is the smallest its close to the same size as a 302

Re: 2.5L to 351W swap
Found some information you may or may not have.
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...nversions.html
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/25...-or-400-a.html
Another consideration is the oil pan. While you are on the TRS site check out the information on that topic. Somewhere I have a link for an online company that sells the pan.
The above pic will give you an idea of what the difference is, the Cleveland will be about 4" narrower than the 4.6, but the rest will be about the same.
Hope this helps, I have a picture of a 351M sitting next to a 351W but can't find it at this time, if and when I do I'll post it.
