302 used or new
Ok so I had this idea of going 4.0 stroked to 4.3, supercharged, water/meth injection, badass heads, cams.... and the list goes on and on. Wanted to be making 500hp. All of that work would have come out to around 13,000$. Not worth it. that would have been about the limit of power to possibly make. Now I want to go 5.0 route. I have read pages and pages of info on this thread and have a few questions that just didnt quite seem to get answered.
i see people using the expo 5.0 and entire drive train. But people are taking it out of expos earlier then my year and swapping into rangers earlier then my year. Could I order a crate motor 302 and get a t-5 trans convert to manual and have that work. I know I would need some stuff like PATS and not quite sure of it all. But for all wiring and electronics could I just take that from a expo and work in my 2002 ranger. I dont like stock, and have a huge need for power. Was thinking of stock lower, and getting some good heads and cam for it. Would be fine with that for a while. I have 4x4 and would love to have AWD, what else would be needed for that. Trans, transfer case, drive shaft. What about rear and front end, would those have to get swapped as well.
By the way budget is around 7000-8000
Sorry for all of the questions but I have having vauge knowledge on things.
Thanks Mike

Re: 302 used or new
do you have emission testing where you are? they may frown on putting an older engine in your truck

Re: 302 used or new
Good thing about being military I never have to do any. But if I really wanted to get out of it I could register the truck back home and then there wouldnt be any worry for emissions. Which is what I plan to do when I get back to the states.

Re: 302 used or new
Might wanna dig into emission requirements for where you plan to live. I believe that in my state, the used vehicle you sell to another person needs to pass emissions, and if it doesn't they can come back on you. Would have to verify, it was on the table, IIRC it's now law. One message here is very clear, in this neck of the woods not only must it pass emissions but if you've changed engines to something that was not offered OEM you've got a problem, even if it does pass emissions. Seller beware. I'm so glad I live in a free country.

Re: 302 used or new
I would highly doubt I would ever sell this truck. Once I get bored with something it turns into either a new project or turn the current project completly overboard. so it would end up turning into some kind of crazy drag truck from hell. Or I would swap all of the stock parts back into it and then trade it in or sell it. But like I previously stated, Military so I dont have to do regular emissions checks(ever), and then my county back home doesnt require emissions either.

Re: 302 used or new
"500hp" becomes an issue with a stock 5.0l block, you're going to crack it in half. but numbers (guesses/speculations) don't tell the story, drive-ability does. get around the PATS and you can put anything you want into it. i don't have a PATS truck, but if I did and wanted to by-pass it, the first thing I would do is take it apart and research (get an EVTM) how it worked so I could come up with a game plan on the best route to bypass it. it's been done before, there are trucks that have or used to have PATS that have carburetors. it's kinda sketchy to me that most never post how they got around it, though.

Re: 302 used or new
Oh no, you can push 500hp on that block. We had 600hp going in my buddies f150 for 2 seasons before we finally blew it by adding nitrous. but i would prob just stick with a easy 350-400hp and call that a day. Like the idea of going carb, but i would rather my daily be efi.

Re: 302 used or new
The new ecoboost motors are hard to swap and work with. Some of the factory ECU's haven't been able to be cracked yet.
It depends which application you decided to go with and they would require a lot of professional tuning. Too much hassle for not a lot of payout if you ask me.

Re: 302 used or new
There was a guy on here who added a single to his 4.0. it was pretty badass.

it might have lasted enough to get through, but pushing that out of a stock efi block is a ticking time bomb. but to each their own I guess

I'm with pete, 500hp to a stock block is asking for it.

Re: 302 used or new
no turbos, i have been down that road before. my original plan for this truck was heads, cams, intake, exhaust, tuner, supercharger, stroked to 4.3L, water/meth injection. all total going to run me around 13,000 but i want something cheaper and with more possibilities for the future. And i will also pass on swapping in the new ecoboost.

Re: 302 used or new
that's why we do this custom parts for the cologne v6s will drain your budget in a hurry. i'd built a pretty stout 2.9 v6 and was heading a similar path with an eaton m90; it was fun, but lesson learned lol i did make some money back selling off what I had at least. i probably had around 5-6 grand into it, but just a conservative guess. that will go far with a common v8
