If you have a good set of winter tires on and know how to drive in the snow, you will almost never need to use chains. Having a set just in case you do hit that almost part is a very good idea. One set for all of your drive wheels.

Also, if the conditions are bad enough that you need to use chains, you shouldn't be going faster than 30 mph anyway.
