I agree and I just went through this with my wife's Ford Edge. She has 17 inch tires compared to the Ranger's 15 inch. One idea is to find the tires you want and have them shipped to a store like NTB. Tire-Rack will ship anywhere and then you can have a shop mount and balance them or find a local tire shop based on recommendations. For street driving, I don't think it makes as big a difference because it is the thick tread you're after vs. tread and the tire being able to hold up to off-road abuse.
