If the spring was on the other side of the axle, it would lower it.

Rangers have what is simply called a "spring over rear"...meaning...the spring is ontop of the axle. If you put in a block, it'll RAISE the truck. Most other compact trucks are what is simple called "spring under rear" meaning the spring is under the axle and if a block was put between, it would lower it.

Options for lowering the rear of a Ranger: Shackle flip for 1.5" or so drop. Flip kit which puts the spring below the axle(good for 5" drop). Flip kit w/ chevy 2" drop shackle(will actually LIFT a ranger) is good for 3" rear drop. I think there may even be lowering springs, but they are quite expensive and nobody runs 'em and I'm not too knowledgeable on them.
